Chemistry Introduction to Chemistry Compiled by Amy
2
What is Chemistry? Chemistry is the study of matter. Matter is the term for what forms all living and nonliving things. Chemistry is the science of asking questions about all matter and the properties of matter.
3
What do chemists do? Chemists experiment. Chemists make observations. Chemists ask many questions usually more than they answer.

Alchemy?

Johann Joachim Becher From Speyer Germany Studied Everything Even invented a universal language. Told the Dutch government that he could turn sand into gold if they gave him enough money. He gave Germany the potato to feed the pigs and peasants. But he did something really awesome.

Johann Joachim Becher Candle’s Flame Question - What happens if we put a candle under a glass? Hypothesis - What do you think will happen. Scientific Method

Joseph Priestly Used a Pneumatic Trough Priestly trapped air! He tried this with mercuric oxide and then he put a candle in the air. The candle practically exploded. He tried again with mice. Introduce Control Group. He found that the air was interesting and did strange things to people. He actually tried it. He discovered by accident Laughing Gas or Nitrus Oxide.

Scientists Ask the Tough Questions Chemists want to know: Can this compound get any smaller? When will it be an atom and “uncuttable”? What happens if we put these atoms together? What happens if we take these atoms apart? Like all good scientists we will do the experiments our selves and observe.
