Mammatus Clouds
14
Mammatus are pouches hanging from the bottom of a cloud
15
Sometimes a “Wall Cloud” will form
16
This is a part of the cloud that lowers really close to the ground
17
90% of all tornadoes form from Wall Clouds
18
The other type of low cloud is a “Stratus” Cloud
19
These are layer or blanket clouds
20
They are the clouds on gray, dreary days
21
Stratus are most common in winter

If a stratus cloud forms on the ground….

It is called “Fog”
24
If a stratus cloud Rains….
25
It’s called a “Nimbostratus”
26
The next level of clouds are “Mid-Level” Clouds “Alto” is a word meaning middle
27
“Altocumulus” are cumulus clouds higher in the atmosphere
28
Many times they look like popcorn
29
“Altostratus” look very much like regular Stratus clouds
30
But they are sometimes thinner and not complete across the sky
31
The highest clouds in the sky are Cirrus Clouds. They form so high up that all the water in them has frozen to ice
32
Cirrus Clouds are very white in color…..
33
…and wispy in shape
34
Some Other Odd forms of clouds include…
35
Contrails
36
Formed from the exhaust of Jets
37
Lenticular
38
Which are cumulus clouds smoothed out by strong winds
39
Many times they are reported as UFO’s
40
“Pileus” clouds form on the top of mountains
41
They often look like caps over the mountain top
42
“Noctilucent” clouds glow in the dark
43
They are very rare and few good pictures of them exist
44
The last type of very rare cloud is a “Nacreus” cloud
45
“Nacreus” clouds shine like the inside of a clam shell
46
Now… Try to name these clouds
