Oct. 13, Afternoon: Discussion: 1.What kinds of needs from other direction? 1.1characterization of uncertainties: exposure better quality vs higher resolution using model 1.2 how to use the information about uncertainty: statistical tool needs to be developed to better use the uncertainty 1.3understand the local sources (e.g. traffic) where people live, spatial resolution at local level is important 1.4 resolution requirement depends on purpose 1.5to consider both spatial and temporal resolution at the same time, short term 1.6many sources contributed to uncertainties besides the concentration 1.7reasonable way back track of air pollution in the past: hindcast 1.8the changing composition of atmosphere: ozone as an indication of photo oxidants 1.9 different set data for different purpose
2
2. Existing and emerging tools to meet the uncertainty and resolution: high vs low tech 2.1tech development help to better measure exposure at high resolution 2.2passive samplers at high resolution All depends on the question you ask 3. Metrics, methods and limitations: 3.1 hybrid system for exposure: supersite, personnel measurement, satellite, model 3.2 scientific question, criteria, methods 3.3 limitations: what level of uncertainty makes difference? 3.4 are we measuring right pollutants? 3.5 surface information: ROS measurement? 3.6 satellite is important, existing capacity is losing, high resolution satellite 3.7 standardzation documentation Test hypothesis with the atmospheric composition measurements 4. Is there evidence for the relationship between oxidative stress and mortality/morbidity
3
Mortality vs morbidity: to pay attention to chronicle diseases inflammatory diseases, diabetes linking to the composition of fine particles 30 years, 20 km resolution, o3, and PM species data: are these data useful for epi study? Need good measurements, not necessary the best The local gradient: traffic, woods smoke, dust, different mixtures could be different Exposure high resolution, indoor/outdoor ratio, model validation Design the epi study to better quantify the exposure Get everybody involved at the initial stage in designing the experiment High concentration data in Africa and Asia Regional study to address the differences Multi pollutants: not simply adding up
4
Audience: atmospheric chemistry health broader community: chronicle diseases get into sections: areas with different knowledge, what does this mean for different communities summarize the existing knowledge, forward looking: research opportunities compelling problem statement: dynamic change at different part of world, different sources, metrics, different approach, broad problem, gap need to be identify economy: the spend on pollution control and its benefits in developed and developing countries changing the global landscape, urbanization the relax in developed word in air pollution control the achievement in the past, the chance we underestimate the risk a cheaper approach needed Aims for perspective + A short report
5
New technology development (satellite): Opportunity to leverage the existing platform, how to bring the resources into developing world Increasing the utility Last paragraph to address to the funding agency 1. Science: high resolution to understand the mechanism to link to the epi study 2. Surface area Complexity of the issues: health effects exposure: supersite, micro-scale Satellite can be done for different purpose What is really the new steps: better, cheaper, faster? specific composition with huge toxicity, huge cost/benefits more source specific evolution in US, Europe, China
