Ionic Compounds Binary compounds: compounds composed of two elements Binary Ionic Compounds Made up of what types of elements? Ex. KCl Contains: potassium cations (K+) chloride anions (Cl-)

Ionic Compounds Ex. Rust: Iron (III) oxide writing the formula: Fe 3+ O 2- Balance the charges (basically switch charges) Fe 2 O 3 find the least common multiple of the charges: 3*2 =6, two Fe 3+ cations (6+ charge) will balance the O 2- anions (6- charge) Formulas for ionic compounds always show the lowest whole-number ratio of the ions

Naming Binary Ionic Compounds (going backwards) CuO Copper oxide There are two forms of copper, how do you know which form, Cu + or Cu 2+ ? CuO 1:1 ratio What is the charge on the oxide ion? (2-) In order for there to be a 1:1 ratio, there must be a 2+ charge on the copper, making it Copper (II) oxide
