Chemistry Exercise Determine the chemical formula for the following ionic compounds: Sodium ChlorideAmmonium Oxide Magnesium FluorideCopper (I) Chloride Calcium OxideCopper (II) Chloride Potassium SulfideMagnesium Sulfate Aluminum ChlorideAluminum Nitrate Aluminum OxideTin (IV) Carbonate
2
Properties of Ionic Compounds 1. All ionic compounds form crystals. 2.Ionic compounds tend to have high melting and boiling points. 3.Ionic compounds are very hard and very brittle. 4.Ionic compounds conduct electricity when they dissolve in water.
3
Rules for Naming Ionic Compounds 1. The name of the cation always comes first. 2. If the cation is a transition metal, then a Roman Numeral is used after the cation to indicate it’s charge. 3. The name of the anion always comes second. 4. If the anion is an element, the ending of the name is changed to –ide.
