Using your netbook computer Before you start using your netbook computer, there are a few things you should know about safe and ethical computer use, both online and offline. Buckle up!

COMPUTER SAFETY online and offline online… Protect your online usernames and passwords…and your identity! Don’t be a pirate or violate copyright laws! Don’t open any website or any e-mail that looks suspicious! Don’t visit unapproved sites! (If you’re not sure, at school ask a teacher, at home ask a parent.) Be polite and never be a cyber-bully! Remember ‘everything’s recorded’!

offline… Protect your personal log-in usernames and passwords…and your identity Beware of viruses! (Don’t use “just anyone’s” flash drive!) Save your work frequently! Don’t trip over your power cord! COMPUTER SAFETY online and offline

Protect your usernames, passwords, and identity! (Don’t walk away when you’re logged in, either. Someone can impersonate you and cause you all kinds of trouble and embarrassment.) Remember that ‘everything’s recorded’, so don’t type or post any info or photos that you might regret sharing with every person in the world with Internet access! Be polite and don’t participate in arguments or post negative comments! Keep private things private and public things public! Always get appropriate permission before posting any video clips, audio clips, etc.! Social Networking do’s and don’ts

Methods for Checking for Plagiarism Make sure everything you create and produce is original and authentically made by you or used with permission! If you are specifically instructed to use and cite online sources or to quote texts, cite and quote sources correctly! Many teachers use online resources like Turnitin.com to check student work for plagiarism automatically (Turnitin will actually give a ‘percent authentic’ rating to student work, so, rest assured, even a little plagiarism will show up. Be warned!)
