Adventure Definition: an exciting or unusual experience Example: The Old Man and the Sea He goes on a fishing adventure!

Symbol Definition: anything that stands for or represents something else Example: Moby Dick, the whale is a symbol of Ahab and his fears

Archetype Definition: patterns in literature found around the world. Example: OMS, Santiago and Mannolin, their relationship.

American Romanticism Definition: Literary and artistic movement of the 19 th century, imagination and emotion. Example: Moby Dick

Wilderness Gothic Definition: the use of primitive, mid-evil, wild, or mysterious elements in literature Example: To Build a Fire

Captivity Narrative Definition: a story when somebody has been taken captive. Example: Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge

Internal Conflict Definition: struggle between an opposing force, inside the character Example: To Build a Fire, the man is contemplating many things about the cold and his survival.

External Conflict Definition: struggle between and opposing force, outside the character. Example: The Old Man and the Sea, the old man is battling a fish.
