2 Helping small and large farms meet the challenges of global food security
large-scale farms >100 Ha Our ambition is to bring greater food security in an environmentally sustainable way to an increasing populous world by creating a worldwide step-change in farm productivity 450M smallholder farms ~2.0 Ha Notes: To achieve global food security we must recognize the imperative of yield gain but also go beyond it, to encompass all the resources involved. Our ambition is to bring greater food security in an environmentally sustainable way. That calls for a step-change in productivity and resource efficiency – on both the world’s five million large farms and its 450 million smallholdings. Every farmer has a part to play.

3 Demand for food is driven by population growth and rising calorie consumption
World population > 80% of growth happens in emerging markets 1950 2.5 billion 2011 7 billion 2050 9 billion Emerging Developed Source: FAO, Syngenta analysis World demand for major crops* bn tonnes Food Feed +50% Notes: In 1950, the world’s population was just 2.5 billion. In October 2011, it hit 7 billion and we can expect another 2 billion people by 2050. Additionally we will face an ongoing trend of diet changes in emerging markets, where we also see the strongest population growth with +80 %. To highlight a consequence of this growth; grain demand will increase by +50% by 2050. * Includes cereals, rice, corn and soybean

4 Environmental stresses are increasing
World stress map The change in climate is already reducing water and arable land Climate change impact High Medium Low 1950 2030 1 hectare fed 2 people 1 hectare needs to feed 5 people Requiring better use of existing farm land Notes: Growers must contend with many external environmental impacts: Climate change and weather volatility, water scarcity and land degradation. As indicated on this world stress map the change in climate is already reducing water and arable land. Two thirds of the world’s surface are facing high or medium climate change impact. Animated build on mouse click: The global challenges make it an ever more changing environment for farmers to work in. Population growth and land scarcity will lead to the need for a further increase in people fed per hectare of land. So while one hectare could feed two people in 1950, by 2030 it will have to feed five. Food demand is already outstripping supply. Farmers must grow more from less: our business is to help make that possible. Source: UNEP, Cline, Syngenta

5 Our contribution is to raise productivity in sustainable ways
Better solutions Resource efficiency Rural economies Land People Technology improving farm productivity reducing agriculture’s environmental footprint Grow more from less Notes: Our ambition is to help growers deliver greater food security to an increasingly crowded world in an environmentally sustainable way It needs a sustainable production system that links technology, people and land: Better solutions improving farm productivity while reducing agriculture’s environmental footprint through resource efficiency Allowing rural economies to build rural, sustainable prosperity Animated build on mouse click: We need to grow more from less building rural prosperity

6 With passionate people and a strong platform
$14.2bn sales in 2012 Over 27,000 employees in some 90 countries Over $1.25 billion annual R&D investment and more than 5,000 R&D staff Notes: Yearly, we are investing more than $ 1.25bn in R&D and engaging more than 5,000 R&D professionals worldwide. With 27,000 passionate employees in more than 90 countries. Delivering local solutions worth $ 14.2 bn sales in 2012.

8 Syngenta is growing in North Carolina
RTP greenhouse expansion announced May 20, 2011 Planned investment of approximately $71 million Footprint includes approximately 147,000 square feet Completed in Spring 2013 Ability to control multiple environmental variables allows for more annual growing cycles Greenhouses:  Positioned to receive optimal sunlight  Made of all glass, instead of acrylic  Independently controlled room temperatures  Control of climate including humidity and gases such as carbon dioxide Growth Chambers:  Designed specifically for Syngenta using technology developed by NASA for growing vegetation on space stations  Ability to control all environmental variables (light, temperature, moisture, etc.)  Ability to precisely measure plant responses  Research genetics of crops such as corn, soybeans, sugar cane, rice, cereals (wheat) and vegetables  Focus on developing agronomic traits that optimize crop yields by aiding in the efficient use of resources or by resisting stresses  Ability to control multiple environmental variables allows for more annual growing cycles  Ability to isolate plant inputs and measure plant responses makes sure traits are achieving the desired effect  Accelerates research capabilities and discovery process
