NO KILLING PEOPLE

AKA … SAFETY IN COMM TECH HOW CAN WE NOT HURT OURSELVES, OTHERS, OR THE EQUIPMENT IN COMM TECH? (YES, THERE’S A QUIZ ON THIS STUFF AT THE END OF THIS BORING PRESENTATION THAT YOU MUST PASS OR ELSE YOU GET SENT BACK TO GRADE 5)

SAFETY IN COMM TECH This stuff is so important, you even get evaluated on it throughout the whole semester: The Ontario Government says that you must… Observe safety rules and regulations (OE) Apply health and safety standards when using products and materials (SE) Operate equipment safely (SE)

SAFETY IN COMM TECH YOU! You are awesome. You don’t want to hurt you. Try the following things to avoid hurting you:

SAFETY IN COMM TECH HOW TO KEEP YOU AWESOME: 1)Sleep well: (min 8hrs) every night)! Less internet, more sleep to stay awesome! 2)Eat well: less sugar, more veggies 3)Exercise: Just Do It (start slow though) 4)Ask questions: Don’t know how to use the nail gun? Ask the teacher FIRST! 5)Talk: Hurt yourself? Tell your teacher immediately! Even if you made a really stupid mistake, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE tell the teacher about your injury IMMEDIATELY! This way we can help you get the right treatment and protect others.

SAFETY IN COMM TECH HOW TO KEEP YOU AWESOME: 1)Talk more! Feel like your head’s going to blow up because of school, work, sports, family stuff, dead pet, no money….? TALK to someone! The school has professional nurses, psychologists, social workers, financial assistance plans, free bus tickets, community support officers and LOTS MORE! That’s what Student Services is for, so please… TALK TO THEM! They really can help you. Teachers are pretty reasonable about school work so they can usually work out a plan to help you, but… you must TALK to them before due dates.

SAFETY IN COMM TECH MORE WAYS TO KEEP YOU AWESOME: 1)WANT TO BE ABLE TO SEE WHEN YOU’RE 40? Avoid using the computer for too long at once! Don’t use a computer in a dark room Use polarized glasses outside (even in winter) Have sunglasses for your models when setting up the studio lighting 2) WANT TO BE ABLE TO HEAR WHEN YOU’RE 40? Don’t listen to music too loudly! SRSLY! You WILL want your ears later in life for things like having conversations, meetings, music, movies, hearing car horns and fire alarms… Hearing is quite useful, don’t throw it away.

SAFETY IN COMM TECH EVEN MORE WAYS TO KEEP YOU AWESOME: Use a computer like this:

SAFETY IN COMM TECH Use a mouse and a keyboard like this:

SAFETY IN COMM TECH NOT YOU! Yes, you are awesome, but so are your classmates. Let’s keep them alive.

SAFETY IN COMM TECH HOW TO KEEP YOUR CLASSMATES ALIVE: 1)Take care of you: A healthy, safe, alert you is good for everyone else 2)SLIPS, TRIPS & FALLS! Prevent SLIPS by: a) not spilling anything b) blocking off the spilled area BEFORE you clean it up. Keep it blocked off until it’s safe and dry c) Good news. Don’t clean up the spill yourself. TELL YOUR TEACHER FIRST. Your teacher will decide if you can handle it, or if it’s best the janitors deal with the issue.

SAFETY IN COMM TECH HOW TO KEEP YOUR CLASSMATES ALIVE: Slips, Trips and Falls Continued: Prevent TRIPPING by: a) not leaving things on the floor to trip over! b) NO BACKPACKS! Many students have tripped and died because of backpacks on the floor in my class. So, do not bring your backpack to class. If you do, I will lock it in the ‘backpack box’ until the end of class. c) Cables! Cables are like lethal snakes trying to bite at your feet and ankles to take you down! Keep cables wrapped up and off of the floor. If cables are on the floor, step slowly, and carefully around them. d)Beep. Make beeping sounds and look around you when stepping backwards.

SAFETY IN COMM TECH HOW TO KEEP YOUR CLASSMATES ALIVE: Slips, Trips and Falls Continued: Prevent FALLING by: a)Wearing proper footwear b)KEEP YOUR FEET ON THE GROUND AT ALL TIMES! Do not rock on the stools. Do not climb on desks or ladders. When your classmates forget the ‘KEEP YOUR FEET ON THE GROUND’ rule – please remind them!

SAFETY IN COMM TECH HOW TO KEEP YOUR CLASSMATES ALIVE: 1)Fire! We will now go over the procedure and our exit options 2)Lock down. I’m very serious about lock-down practice. Here’s what we’re going to do when it happens. 3)Eye Wash stations are located there and there. This is how we use them (demo) and when we would use them. Again, always immediately tell your teacher after you, or another classmate has used the eye wash station.

SAFETY IN COMM TECH STUFF! Yes, you are awesome, and so are your classmates, but we also have some awesome stuff in this room that we want to keep alive.

SAFETY IN COMM TECH HOW TO KEEP OUR EQUIPMENT AWESOME: 1)NO WATER! Water and electronics do not mix! No fluids near ANY of the equipment! Not at the computers, not near the lighting, not near the video cameras, not near the batteries, not near the cables. Not even any water bottles beside your computer! Not even. 2) A PLACE FOR EVERYTHING AND EVERYTHING IN ITS PLACE! Please return all equipment to where you signed it out from. 3)DON’T FORCE IT: If an SD card won’t go into the camera: DON’T FORCE IT! (tell your teacher instead). If a cable won’t plug into the computer: DON’T FORCE IT! (tell your teacher instead). If the tripod doesn’t move: DON’T FORCE IT! (tell your teacher instead). Get it?

SAFETY IN COMM TECH Sorry for the boringnessness of this presentation. We have to do all the safety stuff before we can get to making awesome stuff.
