2 The Importance of Government
Keep Order and Provide Security Laws help resolve or find a solution to problems Enforce laws they make Need for security- protections from attacks Provide Services Libraries, Schools, Hospitals, and Parks Build and repair streets and bridges Collect garbage and deliver the mail Local Govt (police/fire departments) State (license drivers and doctors) (food, monetary support, housing, healthcare, and special programs for people with disabilities Federal (good, medicines, and products are safe) Guide the Community Public policy

3 Levels of Government Federal or National State Local
Highest authority over citizens Makes and enforces laws for the entire country Basic rules for Citizenship State Marriage laws, make rules for schooling, and hold elections Manage public health and safety Build roads and bridges Local Schools, police and fire departments, emergency medical services, and local courts Outdoor lighting and removing snow from the streets

5 Types of Government Democratic Representative Democracy (USA)
Citizens choose a group of people to represent them, make laws, and govern on their behalf Republic Role in choosing the person to who will be the head of the state (President) Constitutional Monarchy Hereditary ruler (King/Queen) Power is limited by country’s constitution Prime Minister heads the government *Majority Rule

6 Types of Government Authoritarian
Power is held by a person or a group not accountable to the people Monarchy (Ex King Saudi Arabia- supposed to follow Islamic law) Dictatorship( Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, Cuba, N. Korea, and Myanmar) Totalitarian rule- government controls all aspects of life Take away individual freedom– Ideology controls the media and uses scare tactics Socialism Society controls all aspects of the economy Government instead of private owner decides what items the industries produce and what jobs workers will have
