A “Terrible” Hypothesis “I have done a terrible thing. I have postulated a particle that cannot be detected.” - Wolfgang Pauli (1930)
4
How can we detect neutrinos? Neutrinos have VERY SMALL interactions with other matter → so we need VERY BIG detectors to see them.

6
Neutrino Experiments are AMAZING!
7
Where do neutrinos come from? ★ radioactive decay ★ nuclear reactions (inside the Sun, for example) ★ nuclear reactors ★ particle accelerators ★ cosmic ray interactions ★ OUTER SPACE

The IceCube Experiment
9
Interesting IceCube result: IceCube detected two very high energy neutrinos -- “Bert” and “Ernie” Bert and Ernie have energy of ~ PeV (!!) ErnieBert
10
How rare are the PeV neutrinos? - - a Highway Analogy Most cars drive at the speed limit… but imagine a rocket ship driving down the highway! (this is forbidden even on German highways) speed number of cars speed limit
