Why should you sell popcorn? Chris Paquin
6
Why Sell Popcorn? It can be the one fundraiser you have for the entire year! A High Return to the Unit! No out-of-pocket Expenses You have a plan & support team High Quality Product It’s a great learning opportunity for the scouts Fantastic community outreach opportunity (think recruitment!)
7
Did you know? 85% of all people asked to buy popcorn will buy at least one item 92% of consumers will buy popcorn year after year When asked to buy from a Scout in Uniform, 2 out of 3 consumers will say yes Only 18% of US households have been contacted about buying popcorn We have lots of opportunity to grow our sale!
8
The incentive system is great! We have chosen things Scouts want AND can use when they’re camping!
9
Also – “Camp Cash!” Easy to understand “Camp Cash” system It starts low - $400 in sales! “Camp Cash” can be used for Treasure Valley Summer Camp, High Adventure bases, OR at the Trading Post!
10
Gift Cards! Amazon is an option, as well as Cabela’s!! And if kids and families really want to, they can use the Gift Card amount towards camp too.
11
Popcorn Vendor & Product Line-up Marti Thompson
12
New Vendor! We decided to go with a new vendor this year, Pecatonica River Popcorn. Why? A few reasons: 1. Their popcorn tastes FANTASTIC! 2. The package mostly in TINS, which people love! 3. More popcorn for the money! 4. Patriots Superbowl Tin is COOL! 5. 90 th Anniversary of Treasure Valley Tin is REALLY COOL!

54
Some Sales Tips & Best Practices Chris Paquin
55
Best Practices Incorporate popcorn into your unit meetings - foster competition with boys, Dens and Patrols! Spend some money to make money – reward the boys from unit commissions! Support your scouts with sales tools and tips Publically recognize sellers! And be creative with incentives! Pie-in-the-face, weekly unit drawings, paracord mummies, etc. Use Blitzes and Show & Sells – easy money! Focus on units and effort, not dollars
56
Best Practices (cont..) Be transparent to parents and scouts on rewards and benefits (and use this to convince them to sell, too!)… Product-in-hand works GREAT – one visit, payment up- front! Keep track of no-show’s, and go back later on. Remember that our customers aren't buying popcorn, they're supporting Scouting! Interesting motivation technique: keep going until you get 10 NO’s!
57
What the most successful units do.. Encourage scouts to sell! They can earn Belt Loops, Activity Badges, and Merit Badges while they sell! Incorporate popcorn as part of their fall program! Plan out Neighborhood Blitzes and Show-and-Sells early! Use Popcorn as their one and only fundraiser!
58
Some Clarifications Chris Paquin
59
How to handle cash donations… Recommendation: put down $10 line items – we’re not the popcorn police Reporting Blitz sales Blitzes are a great opportunity to get kids selling who aren’t necessarily comfortable going door-to-door on their own. Pairing up younger kids with more experienced kids works GREAT!!! Reporting Show and Sell sales Recommendation: divvy up the total sales on each scouts’ sheets (based on participation)
60
Open discussions How do you get individual families to sell? How do you do a good (and fun!) blitz?
