Understand the Criminal Justice Department policy Review why the policy exists What hours and service will be (and won’t be) accepted under the policy Review the form that is required When should you start?

Requires A MINIMUM OF 20 hours of volunteer community service All hours to be completed BY THE END OF YOUR THIRD SEMESTER Evaluated in Service Readiness – a required course 50% of your course grade (pass/fail) 20 hours of service will be recognized by a Bronze Award Hours must be documented Hours must be pre-approved be a staff member Hours exceeding 20 hours will be recognized 40 hours = Silver Award 60 hours = Gold Award

Criminal Justice occupations are all about SERVICE! Personal growth will occur You become more competitive in the job market We are asked all of the time by all kinds of organizations for assistance – THERE IS AN EXPECTATION OF YOU BEING SERVICE – MINDED!!!

Must be non-profit Must be pre-approved by a CJ Department member Must be NON-PAID May NOT be done during class time IF part of a class requirement

Tutoring children Habitat for Humanity Playing checkers with elderly Assisting with police agency projects such as: Counting homeless Compliance checks Eliminating graffiti Boys and girls club mentoring Big Brother/Big Sister Role-playing for CJ Agency training scenarios Coaching youth (K-8) or Special Olympic sports if not paid and relatives are not on the team

Coaching sports if paid Refereeing sports Working as a paid member at a non-profit organization Any volunteer activity that is or may reflect poorly upon Mid-State Technical College, the Criminal Justice Department, or Law Enforcement An activity that can not be verified Volunteer fire departments (paid) Part-time law enforcement (paid) Military service (we thank you for your service but it is paid) Any part-time, auxiliary membership on a law enforcement department is NOT eligible for this requirement regardless if paid or not paid

Volunteer activity is likely to be an employment interview question The career requires interaction with a wide spectrum of society Its good to interact with individuals/groups we are unfamiliar with MOST IMPORTANT??? It shows that we are truly willing to SERVE our community and we can prove it by how we have served while we were training!
