Energy Free Stock Tanks Review of Existing Deemed Savings Regional Technical Forum July 7, 2009
2
Energy Free Stock Tanks - Review Definition: Super-insulated livestock watering tanks that do not require freeze protection using an outside “fuel”. Baseline is a system that uses thermostatically controlled electric resistance element freeze protection.

Details of the Existing Deemed Energy Savings & Cost Energy Savings – Based monthly energy consumption data from one electrically heated tank during the 2002/2003 heating season in Union, OR. (1137 kWh/year). – Results track with PAMI’s “study” that showed 440 kWh to 1800 kWh/year. – Weather normalization to the three heating zones uses a straight average temperature weighting. (Weighting Factor heating zone ) = (Avg Temp °F heating zone )/(Average Temp °F Union ) (Energy Use heating zone ) = (Weighting Factor heating zone ) * (Energy Use Union ) Cost ($370) – Based on data from OTEC on cost of unit ($400), minus cost of heating element ($30). Number of Claims in 2007 & 2008 under CRC = 40 units Note: Preliminary estimated 6 th Plan cutoff for cost- effectiveness is about 60 to 70 mils/kWh for non-lost- opportunity measures.

Issues w/ Current Assumptions Energy Savings – Savings based on a sample size of only 1 The following would effect the energy use of an electrically heated tank: gallon capacity, # of gallons used per day (type and # of animals), insulation effectiveness, thermostat settings, etc. – Other options for weather normalization: 1. Normalize based on # days less than 32 or 35 degrees 2. Normalize based on “degree days, base 32 or 35” Cost may need revision, updating

Decisions Continue to Provide a Deemed Value? – Use existing savings or revise or hold off for more monitoring? – Use existing cost, or seek an update?
