2 sexuality is an important aspect of health— based on personal values: family culture religion society our decisions about our sexual relations can have a huge impact on our lives for this class we will briefly focus on physical health issues of birth control & STDs

3 birth control regardless of age, important to consider abstinence—100% effective oral contraceptives—97% effective condoms—88% effective withdrawal—72% effective no contraception—15% effective

4 sexually transmitted diseases infections passed from person to person through sexual intercourse— sexually transmitted disease (STD) venereal disease (VD) most common STDs: chlamydia genital herpes genital warts AIDS—the most virulent & deadly of all STDs gonorrhea hepatitis B syphilis

5 sexually transmitted diseases AIDS: caused by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) spread only when blood, semen, or vaginal fluid from an infected person enters someone else’s body preventing an STD is easier than treating an infection once it occurs—only monogamy between two uninfected partners or abstinence completely eliminates risk even if person exhibits no symptoms, can still pass disease along

6 sexually transmitted diseases to reduce risk of an STD— begins with thinking and talking use latex condoms with any new partner until you are certain that neither one of you has an STD

7 substance abuse many people use substances that detract from optimal health and performance— tobacco alcohol illegal drugs tobacco association of cigarette smoking with cancer, heart disease & a host of other health problems has created rapid turnaround—except in teens

10 substance abuse too much alcohol at any given time can impair reactions, depth perception and personal judgment almost half of all traffic accidents in which a person was killed are alcohol related very much a part of our society—when it interferes with job performance relationships or poses harm to self or others… it is a problem
