5 Respiratory System ▪ Tar penetrates the smoker’s airways and lungs (destroys the cilia) ▪ Carbon Monoxide unites with the red blood cells, preventing them from carrying oxygen to body’s cells. What does this mean to a smoker? What could they expect their body to function/feel like? ▪ Cilia- hair like structure that lines the inside of the lungs that grab oxygen molecules

6 Circulatory System ▪ Nicotine (addictive substance) makes the heart work harder and speeds up the pulse ▪ Smoking constricts the blood vessels (poor circulation) ▪ Plaque builds up in the blood vessels ▪ Raises blood pressure ▪ What does this information mean to a smoker? What problems might this cause?

7 Skin ▪ Smoking causes wrinkles by narrowing blood vessels in the outer layers of skin. ▪ This causes less blood flow which reduces the amount of oxygen and nutrients that can get to the skin ▪ Damages important connective fibers like collagen and elastin, causing permanent wrinkles. ▪ Turns your fingers yellow ▪ Who can summarize this slide?

8 Nervous ▪ Nicotine ▪ Highly addictive property that causes addiction by releasing dopamine in the brain ▪ Similar to Cocaine and Heroine

9 What is passive smoke? How can that harm someone who doesn’t smoke? In one hour can receive same effect as smoking a whole cigarette
