3 CHRONOLOGICAL RESUME Most widely accepted Good for people who have established or are establishing credentials in a particular field Education and work experience presented in reverse time sequence. Most recent appearing first

7 FUNCTIONAL RESUME Useful if you are changing careers or have been out of work for some time. Good choice for people making initial entry into the workplace. Emphasize accomplishments and achievements Select functions that describe job related activities (relevance).

10 WHAT TO INCLUDE ON YOUR RESUME Identification: Name, address, phone numbers, and email Objective/Career Interest. Include field/occupation in which you are interested in Education. Schools, dates, degrees, area of concentration, GPA, honors, awards. Skills/Accomplishments/Qualifications. Skill areas that correspond to the job.

11 WHAT TO INCLUDE CONTINUED… Experience. Personal Statement (Optional) Example: Unique hobbies, extracurricular activity, volunteer activity, level of motivation, foreign language, awards, honors References. Separate page. Personally contacted. Do not take this lightly. Your references are asked very specific questions. This should be someone you have regular contact with and knows about your career direction and past achievements.

12 WHAT TO INCLUDE… Cover Letter- Always! The cover letter displays your personality and intelligence. It should be persuasive, descriptive, and attractive. 1 st paragraph of cover letter: “Why are you writing” Example: “Graduating student seeking employment at (name of employer)” OR “Responding to a job posting from…”

14 COVER LETTER Include interests that fit with the company or organization (sometimes 2 nd paragraph) Research the company/organization Include specifics about the company: Mission, type of work, reputation, etc. This shows the employer that you have done your homework.\ Tell them why you are right for the job.

15 COVER LETTER The third paragraph should contain your appreciation to the employer for their attention and consideration. Ex: “I look forward to hearing from you soon” “Thank you for the opportunity to be considered for this position”
