UKNF/MICE PSAG, 3/5/11 Spectrometer solenoids: –Repair plan still ‘in approval’, already two months late –Workshop/mini review at LBNL 10 th /11 th May –Internal disagreement between experts over active or passive quench protection: Passive – as designed (magnet has survived several quenches), negligible cost increase Active – ultra-conservative – cost ~$1M –Aim to converge next week, MAP Technical Board then meets at our request and hopefully rubber-stamps the plan –PM and MICE solenoid Review Committee will be represented –Non-controversial modifications to magnets now underway at Wang NMR –Tentative dates are #1 arrives January 2012, #2 three months later 1

Liquid Hydrogen system –R&D cryostat, valve panel, enclosure and transfer line are all fully installed –Electrical control work is done and tested –UPS installed and tested with fans –Extensive ventilation system outside MICE hall making rapid progress –Minor problem though: hole in pre-cool circuit possibly caused by frozen nitrogen –AS Scientific are fixing it, hope to be done in couple of weeks –Mid-Summer milestone for LHe test still looks possible 2

RFCC –Not much to report, –261 drawings of coupling magnet received for approval by MICE – good sign, but we don’t have the effort to do it –Still no news of US re-organisation plan for coupling magnets –Hope to find out more next week, but still no nearer being able to predict Step V date FC Module –Coil winding making good progress, one coil completed –Some redesign of cold mass supports required – not sure why discovered so late –Parallel fabrication going well off-site –Schedule for FC#1 slipped to September 2011, but will try to keep July date 3

Substation upgrade –Contract awarded to JW Morris during February, 2011 –Transformer/RMU/Switchboard base fabrications already installed –Fifteen Morris staff inducted and trained –Transformer and major hardware deliveries are on target for delivery, ie now. –Concentrated installation effort by Morris planned for 13- 27 th May –Power will be off to MICE hall for that time –Look like the bill just scraped into FY10/11 4

PPS –All installation work for DSA and main Hall PPS is done –Both systems have been commissioned –DSA PPS is now operationally part of the ISIS synchrotron –The Main Hall PPS is ready to be used for the July user run for EMR, subject to documentation –Niggling minor physical jobs need doing, but these are in co-operation with ISIS and can be considered ‘maintenance’ –Craig Macwaters of TD has formally replaced John Alexander as PPS owner 5

Other worries Space: –Was invited to present MICE needs to the RALEC –Permission given to use R9 –Drawings of what we need underway, but we might have to ease up a bit, see below People/skills: –Caught up in the FY 11/12 budget discussion –Although given approval by Ian Robson to initiate UK PM, decided not to for now –Need to set priorities to suit anticipated allocation –Concentrate on Step IV only –Don’t need to remind ourselves of risk of taking the team apart for a second time –WP managers are working on minimal project plan, –But also ones that allow expansion 6
