Using a computer to store and analyse information We are going to Identify the advantages of using a computer to hold and analyse data. Use the tools available in excel to provide evidence to prove or disprove hypotheses.

Computerised telephone directory What are the advantages of having the names, addresses and telephone numbers of customers held on a computer rather than using a telephone directory? In pairs. 2 minutes to try to name 5 advantages of using a computer. Link to directory

Some advantages Easy/neat editing (changes). Quick to find information using any category (field). Can sort in any order quickly and accurately. Less space taken to hold large amounts of information. Information easily be copied or transferred. Cost effective for the company. Information can be used in other programs e.g. mail merging to create personal letters. Calculations and graphs can be produced.

‘Censusatschool’ is an organisation that collects information from pupil using an ‘on-line’ data collection form. Look at this data set. (the questionnaire used is shown on the second worksheet, use the TAB at the bottom of the page).

Hypothesis > Evidence > Conclusion “More boys than girls eat fruit”. A “hypothesis” is a statement that we can try to prove or disprove. Getting evidence. We can use the features of excel to find out the average amount of fruit eaten by boys, average amount by girls and then compare the results. The conclusion is simply saying whether the hypothesis is true or false. data set link.

Using the datafile. Use the datafile ‘sample data from the internet’ to complete the worksheet. Remember you can get all the data back by choosing Data > filter > show all

What have we learnt? Can you list 5 advantages of using computers to store information (on your own)? Tell a partner What features of excel have we used to help analyse the data? Autofilter, averages, sorts What is a hypothesis? A statement that can be proved or disproved.

Homework Describe at least 5 advantages of storing information on computer systems rather than on paper. Can you add 2 dis-advantages?
