9. One Who Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975) 29 Based on the 1962 book by Ken Kesey, this film is about Randle P. McMurphy, a convict who prefers the more relaxed environment of a mental institution over the hard labor at the work farm of prison. McMurphy (Jack Nicholson) arrives at the mental asylum and expects to ride out the rest of his jail term on easy street with a bunch of lunatics, but he finds that he must adhere to the strict rules of the institution and follow the orders of Nurse Ratched (Louise Fletcher), an authoritarian nurse who appears to take pleasure in controlling the weak patients. McMurphy’s anti- authoritarian tendencies make him a prime target for the controlling nurse Ratched, but when McMurphy learns that he needs the nurse’s permission to ultimately leave the asylum, he begins to behave properly. His strength of personality begins to rub off on the others, which helps them deal with their neuroses, which makes nurse Ratched’s job more difficult. But when it appears that the nurse is determined to keep him locked up, he tries to escape. This is when he is caught and tragedy strikes. Considered one of the best films ever made, this is a classic that all film buffs must watch. The performance earned Jack Nicholson an Academy Award as well as for Louise Fletcher playing nurse Ratched. Like the bird with wax wings who flew too close to the sun, McMurphy thinks he can walk by the sun without the wax on his wings melting, but this is not what happens. (four stars) Next film

10. Gladiator (2000) 30 This epic film won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 2000 and established Russel Crowe as a bona fide movie star. Set in Rome during the second century AD, the story follows the life of General Maximus (Russel Crowe) after the death of Emperor Markus Aurelius (Richard Harris). The son of the emperor, Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) is furious that Rome is to be changed back into a republic and that he would not become emperor, so he conspires to kill his old and dying father and banishes Maximus to death because he had been selected by the emperor to hold power until the senate can re-establish power. When Maximus escapes, he discovers that Commodus has killed his wife and son. He is picked up and sold as a slave after collapsing from a wound, and soon finds himself fighting as a gladiator. Due to his martial prowess, he proves himself worthy in the fighting arena and soon wins the favor of his boss Proximo (Oliver Reed) and the crowds of Rome. Soon he is brought to the Colosseum where he comes face to face with Commodus. Here, Maximus defies the emperor and thus sets the stage for a showdown that will certainly end with death. Powerful performances and great filmmaking result in an excellent film that depicts the harshness of life as a slave during Roman times, and the timeless determination of a man who fights for justice. 12. Seven (1995) 32 This film is a crime thriller that follows a serial killer over a seven-day period. The veteran cop Detective Somerset (Morgan Freeman) is about to retire and is being replaced by Detective Mills (Brad Pitt), who is gung ho and much more emotional than the reserved and jaded veteran. The film begins with the discovery of the first homicide that is gruesome. Somerset is at first reluctant to put himself wholly into the investigation, but then finds himself unable to not think about the crimes, soon finding himself at the library late at night researching possible motives for the killings. It is soon discovered through the clues left at the crime scene that the killer is preaching through his killings against the seven deadly sins. Finally the killer, John Doe (Kevin Spacey) turns himself in and strikes a deal with investigators in exchange for two new bodies. It isn’t until the very end that they learn that one on them is on the killer’s list. The setting of the film is dark and wet and full of decay, that evokes a sense of desolation and Apocalyptic doom, suggesting urban decay and the decline of the west. A great script and solid performances by the main players, including Mill’s wife Tracey (Gwenyth Paltrow), the film will gross you out and make you cold but at the same time make you appreciate that you’re not living in that type of urban decay. It does make you think of what John Doe says, that in today’s society we do see a deadly sin on every corner and we don’t bat an eye. Next film
