Presented by MOBIL DATA COLLECTIONS ON GRAZING LAND
2
What do we need?
3
Mobil Data Collections on grazing lands Rangeland Pastureland
4
Mobil Data Collection Tests In Arizona, a Fujitsu 3500 tablet computer and a Garmin map76 gps receiver was used for conservation planning activities on rangeland. In Pennsylvania, a Compaq iPAQ and a Garmin map76 gps receiver was used for conservation planning activities on Pastureland
5
Inventory Map ecological sites or forage suitability groups Map field or pasture boundaries Map fences, water developments and other improvements Collect animal inventory information Locate key areas Assess similarity index, range health, and resource concerns at key areas Take digital photo at key areas Provide inventory data and assessment reports to land user Planning Develop alternatives and document selected practice schedule Complete Environmental Evaluation on selected alternative Application Map / Survey planned practices Design practices Complete Environmental Evaluation on practices as needed Provide practice designs to land user Map completed practice and collect data to document practices meets specs. Take digital photo of completed practices Monitoring Collect monitoring data (rainfall, veg trend, actual livestock numbers etc)
8
National level (NRI) Watershed and ranch-level conservation planning monitoring Grazing Land Inventory & Monitoring Tools
9
“Supply me a product that I can rely on” Tools for NRCS use Can be used by and/or compatible with tools used by consultants, landowners, general public Can be used by and/or compatible with tools used by consultants, landowners, general public Reduce data cost, increase quality Reduce data cost, increase quality

they’re not worth collecting. If the data stink...
11
Rangeland NRI CASI 2004 data entry on Trimble Recons (Windows CE) or desktop version Programmed in C Sharp Advantages: Development cost covered by NRI Can move to any Windows-based system Disadvantages: NRI-specific Lacks system for automatically generating indicators in the field
12
Data entry Paper Excel spreadsheets with basic automatic indicator calculation Access database with MS Tablet field forms Includes NRI + additional soil & vegetation methods, monitoring program design guidance Available Summer 2004 On-line Through U of AZ Press 500 copies to NRCS field offices 200 copies to BLM field offices Tablet PC monitoring system
13
Access database with MS Tablet field forms Advantages: Initial development cost covered by DoD, ARS (and possibly USGS/BLM) Flexible plot design, replication, etc... Automated import of plant lists Automated indicator generation (selected indicators) Limited programming required to modify Access database Disadvantages: Requires Tablet or laptop (cost) Not yet integrated into ToolKit
14
Needs ToolKit integration ???
