Definition:A circle graph, also known as a pie chart, is a visual that helps to represent a whole relationship. Each sector represents a part of the whole and also adds up to 100%. Each sector is proportional in size to the amount each it represents of the whole circle. A circle graph is a good visual that makes it easier to make comparisons between the different data collected.

441.5% 449.9% 8.6% Example From Outside Source:

Data:The data that must have been collected to make the graph was the amount of electoral votes per candidate in 1996. As you can see, Clinton and Dole were very close, but Perot’s percentage of 8.6% brought Dole’s down to a 41.5% and allowed Clinton to take the lead with 49.9%.

1.Open up excel 2.Create a table (like the one from two previous slides) with your data and the proper titles 3.Highlight the data entered 4.Choose a circle graph from the chart options 5.You will get a graph similar to this 6.Find your percents by dividing the given amount by the total amount 7.Insert a textbox onto the first sector and type in the percent for that specific sector 8.Repeat step 6 for the rest of the sectors In order to create a graph by hand when given the percentages, you must multiple the percent by 360. (ex: 60%= 0.6*360)

Solve the following problem: If the whole grade consisted of 450 people, what would be an accurate guess for the amount of students going to bed at 11 – 11:59 PM?

 Pie charts allow people to view the data collected not only as numbers, but also as different sized amounts by using the visual multicolored sectors.  Pie charts also let the creator communicate the data as percentages which the audience uses to see the amount as a whole compared to other portions. Also, you can see how close two amounts are to each other.

 The data cannot be compared at a level that is exact; the sector sizes can often be confused, and comparisons can be off.  Two or more different sets of data cannot be compared using pie charts. If you need to compare more than one set of data, you have to use a different type of graph.
