The Olympic Games 2 The Olympic Games began over 2,700 years ago in Olympia, in southwest Greece. The Games were part of a religious festival. The Greek Olympics, thought to have begun in 776 BC, inspired the modern Olympic Games (begun in 1896) The Games were held in honour of Zeus, king of the gods, and were staged every four years at Olympia, a valley near a city called Elis. People from all over the Greek world came to watch and take part

Gods and Goddesses 3 The ancient Greeks believed there were a great number of gods and goddesses. These gods had control over many different aspects of life on earth. In many ways they were very human. They could be kind or mean, angry or pleasant, cruel or loving. They fell in love with each other, argued with each other and even stole from each other. King of all the gods and goddesses was Zeus. He could control the weather and was often called 'the thunderer' or 'the cloud-gatherer'. He lived with the other gods on Mount Olympus, a high mountain in northern Greece. The ancient Greeks built great temples and sanctuaries to their gods. They held festivals in their honour, with processions, sports, sacrifices and competitions. Stories of the gods' exploits were told to children by their mothers and to large audiences by professional bards and storytellers. People today still enjoy hearing stories about the Greek gods.

life 4 Greece was a poor country agriculturally. Most farms were small, and could barely support a family. With about a hectare block and dry-farming, this had to grow grain, fruit trees, olives and vegetables, and somehow sustain an ox to plough the fields. In addition, many families had one or more slaves to both help and be supported. It was a life of grinding poverty which produced a tough hardy people, who were yet highly innovative and inventive. They were ferocious in war to defend their property, but loved the arts and things beautiful. Contrary to the image of austerity, their buildings and statues were painted gaudy colours. A tough farmer and part-time warrior had no qualms in dancing the female parts in the chorus of a play at their religious festivals. With the small farms, it was impossible to subdivide them for several sons. Fairly constant warfare tended to reduce the number of sons, but there was still more than the limited land of the city-state could support. This meant a progressive increase in the non-propertied class and the pressures on the society. This was relieved regularly by sending out colonists to establish new cities and get their land that way. The result was a spread of the Greek world around the coasts from as far west as Massilia (modern Marseilles) through Sicily, southern Italy, the Aegean sea, north Africa, Asia Minor and the Black Sea.
