CC 2007, 2011 atribution - R.B. Allen Scholarship Examine especially complex questions Scholarly communities are groups who are interested in related approaches and issues. Scholarly communities often share their findings and often support their own literature and publishing.
3
Scholarly Communities Scholarship gets some of its value from being neutral and “objective”. However, if scholarship emphasizes impact of results it has the danger of getting involved in politics. CC 2007, 2011 attribution - R.B. Allen
4
Scholarly Publishing Scholarship includes communication of results. Scholarly journals have evolved to provide formal presentations of results. The articles are “peer reviewed”. That is, other scholars in the same field comment on the contribution of the research. Scholarly, publishing is changing with social media and blogs. CC 2007, 2011 attribution - R.B. Allen
5
CC 2007, 2011 atribution - R.B. Allen Citation Analysis and Bibliometrics Scholarly literature is cumulative. Citation of prior literature is expected. The networks of these citations tell us about the development of ideas in a field. Some papers, authors, & journals are more consistently recognized.

CC 2007, 2011 atribution - R.B. Allen Science Science is an approach to knowledge acquisition. In particular, Science can be thought of as developing and applying conceptual models. Is there a “truth” to science? –For a long time, atoms were modeled as little planetary systems. Now, we don’t accept that and use quantum models. Could those models be replaced sometime?
8
CC 2007, 2011 atribution - R.B. Allen Scientific Hypothesis and Models To what extent is logic and science explained by argumentation rather than as a process of systematic hypothesis testing? Kuhn proposed that science develops through “revolutions” or “paradigm shifts”.
9
CC 2007, 2011 atribution - R.B. Allen Social Science Is Social Science a science? Are there models of fundamental processes? Are there testable hypotheses?
10
CC 2007, 2011 atribution - R.B. Allen Science, Technology, and Society (STS) To what extent do science and technology reflect society and to what extent do they change society? Should society fund scientific research? What should the relationship be between science and other societal values?
11
Technology and Engineering Technology is the application of science to practical problems. Engineering is the implementation of the technology across society. Both have tradeoffs and social costs Disruptive technologies CC 2007, 2011 attribution - R.B. Allen

CC 2007, 2011 atribution - R.B. Allen Netwar and Cyberwar Like other high-stakes human activities, war can be information intensive. Cyberwar –Attacking the information infrastructure Netwar –Using information systems to control. – Increasingly using information networks and social media.
