Slap-cup Sun and Moon Trivia Game 1

The RULES 1.Each team will have ONE competitor that challenges each other face to face, based on Ms. Wall’s line-up. 2.Each competitor will keep their left hand behind their back and right hand flat on the table. 3.After the question is read, the first student to smash the cup gets the opportunity to answer the question for 1 Point. 4.If the original competitor answers the question incorrectly yet the second competitor answer correctly, the second player receives 2 points for their team. 5.Comments from the team to help their competitor will result in one, warning then the loss of 1 point for each occurrence. 2

2. What do we call the dark regions on the surface of the moon? Answer: Maria (means oceans in Latin) 4

3. When was the first landing on the moon and by who (both)? Answer: July 21 st 1969- Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldren 5

4. What is the name and description as to how the moon was created? Answer: The Impact Theory- an asteroid the size of Mars, hit Earth breaking off a large portion of the molten crust that was formed to and sphere and solidified as our moon. 6

5. WHY do we only observe one side of the moon? Answer: The moon’s rotation is exactly the same as its revolution (29.5 days), therefore the “Dark Side of the Moon” will never face Earth. 7

6. What is the difference between spring and neap tides? Answer: Spring Tides are HIGHER because the Sun and moon work together; the Neap Tides are LOWER than usual because the Sun and Moon pull against each other. 8

7. What is the alignment, lunar phase and appearance of a Solar Eclipse? Answer: Sun then moon and earth. The MOON blocks the Sun. Occurs during and New Moon Phase 9

8. What is the difference between umbra and penumbra? Answer: The UMBRA is the darker, full shadow while the PENUMBRA is the partially darkened shadow during and an eclispe. 10

9. What is the alignment, lunar phase and appearance of a lunar Eclipse? Answer: Sun, Earth than Moon, full moon phase and appears reddish brown. 11

10. What is the difference between perigee and apogee? Answer: Apogee is when the moon is furthest from the earth while perigee is when the moon is closest to the earth. 12

11. Why is the core of the moon so small? Answer: Due to the Impact Theory, the moon is mostly made up of the earth’s crust. 13

12. What causes the sunrise and sunset? Answer: The rotation of the Earth. 14

13. What are the layers of the sun from the interior outward? Answer: Core, Radiative Zone, Convection Zone, Photosphere, Chromosphere, Corona 15

14. What % of mass is the Sun in our solar system? Answer: 99.9% 16

15. What causes aurora borealis on Earth? Answer: Interaction of the Sun’s solar wind with the earth’s magnetosphere. 17

16. How long does the sun’s solar storms cycle last? Answer: 11.2 years 18

17. What controls the solar storm cycle? Answer: Sunspots- dark cooler magnetic field regions on the surface of the sun. 19

18. What are the FOUR main elements that make up our Sun? Answer: Hydrogen, helium, calcium and oxygen (provide the orange/yellow appearance- think of candle lab) 20

18. What are the particles of light ejected from the Sun? Answer: Photons 21

18. How long does it take for the radiation of the sun to reach earth? Answer: 6-11 minutes, 8.3 average 22
