5 Overview Traditional storytelling takes place through out the archipelago Each ethnic groups has its own art of storytelling and stories with the same moral. These performances will last hours, beginning in the evening and continue until dawn, some will last until several nights

6 Overview RURAL AREAS vs. CITIES In rural areas performances are shown for the entire communities. Stories are usually told by the elders. In the cities children rarely watch traditional storytelling performances.

17 Folktale of Sumatra Legend of Lake Toba North Sumatera
A young man brings home a magical fish that changes form to a beautiful girl when no one is around. She reveals that a spell has been cast upon her and he is the only one who can see her in human. They then become husband and wife, and promise never to tell anyone about her spell even to their son. But one day he got really upset at his son because he was late for dinner and mentioned to him that he is just a fish’s child. This revelation upsets the wife because he broke his promise and have humiliated her in front of their son. Then there was an earthquake and the nearby river overflowed and flood took everything in its path including his wife, the magical fish.

Malin Kundang apprenticed to be a merchant and becomes rich. When he came back to the village, he refuses to recognize his poor parents. One day when he was in the ship, a big storm appears and sink his ship and the parent has cursed him to turned into a stone. Moral: respect to parents.

19 Folktale of Jawa Legend of Tangkuban Perahu (mountain) West Jawa
The name translates to “upside down boat”. The story is about a beautiful girl name Dayang Sumbi. She cast away her son Sangkuriang for disobedience and in her sadness was granted the power of eternal youth by the Gods. After many years in exile, Sangkuriang returned home and had forgotten and failed to recoqnize his mother. He fell in love and planned to marry her. Until she recognize his birthmark just as he was about to go hunting. To prevent the marriage from taking place, she asked him to build a dam on the river nearby and build a large boat to cross the river, both to be done before sunrise. Seeing that the taske were almost completed, she told her workers to spread red silk clothes to give impression of sunrise. Sangkuriang was fooled and believed that he had failed. He kicked the dam and the unfinished boat resulting in severe flood and creation of Mount Tangkuban Perahu.

20 Folktale of Jawa Legend of Prambanan Temple Central Jawa
A man named Bandung Bondowoso is in love with Roro Jonggrang. To refuse his love, Jonggrang asked bondowoso to make her temple with 1000 statues before the sunrise the next morning. The request was nearly fullfilled when Jonggrang asked the villagers to pound rice and set fire in order to look like morning had broken. Feeling cheated, bondowoso who completed 999 statues cursed jonggrang to be the thousandth rock statue.

21 Folktale of Jawa Legend of Rawa Bening (Clear Water Swamp)
Central Jawa Tales of transformation of man to snake. A hermit’s son with ugly face changes into a snake and is cut unwittingly by villagers. He turned into scar-faced boy and is mock by the villagers. In his anger, a body of water appear and the village was flooded with water and became a clear water swamp. Ever since that time, the village has been known as Rawa Bening (clear water swamp).
