SR 1016 – In support of the Expansion of AP Score Eligibility for Credit Hours Authors: Alex Jones (At-Large Representative, Fundraising Committee, Senate of College Councils) Adam Hagerman (President, Fine Arts Council)

Background UT offers, perhaps unnecessarily, more stringent AP score credit offerings than many of our peer institutions. This was one solution to the (1) overcrowding, (2) underfunding, and (3) generally negative and irritated impression of first-semester music theory courses, as discussed with Dean Doug Dempster following the Fine Arts Council’s Town Hall Forum on Budget Cuts, As well as a solution recommended, independently, by Representative Fred Brown (R-Brazos County) of the Texas Higher Education Committee for curbing the costs of higher education. Rationale AP exams are designed by the College Board to cover material at the college level First year courses often repeat material found in the AP curriculum. Repetition of material proven to be mastered through an AP exam is wasteful. A college course is much more expensive to the student, the university, and the State of Texas than is the claiming of credit through AP exams. SR 1016
5
Therefore, Expanding the available AP scores eligible for credit could reduce the number of students taking these classes, saving students, The University of Texas, and the State of Texas time and money.
