PROJECT LV0045 PROMIWA Arne Kittelsen, NOFIMA - Remarks and proposals about Latvian future aquaculture -A demonstration station -Fish farms combined with spare-time activities - Duckweed
2
Eastern Baltic Conference Riga May 2008 2 statements from the conference below One outsider will ask himself: Is this just nice words or is it genuine expressions for a prosperous fish farming in Latvia?
3
Fish farming in Latvia to day A modest production: –Market production 500 t, mostly carp –Carp with low selling prize Latvian Bureaucracy in general -Advantage or disadvantage for progress? Farm gate sale -Loosing control of correct statistic. -Reduction of income from taxes Federal authorities responsible for aquaculture -More interest in preservation, like threaten species, than progress/innovation for profit when farming fish.
4
Opportunities for fish farming in Latvia may depend on: The authorities Arrange administration and work out laws and guidelines that is a benefit for fish farmers Arrange administration giving advantage to innovation Establish institutions directed at education and trainee The fish farmers themselves Get together and work out strategy plans for profit from farming. Work together. Establish a fish farmers union, mostly based on professional interests. Then as a result the relevant authorities will have access to an established forum when the authorities arranging guidelines, taking decisions and treating with fish farming questions. A close cooperation between authorities and fish farmers Instead of blaming authorities start dialogued for improved collaboration! When the intention is a profitable farming: go for one or two species and priority on crayfish and trout. Extend further processing of high value species. Resulting in a higher selling price and the total production of fish/crayfish may still be moderate as forecasted.

Latvian Aquaculture Idea no.1 for the future A demonstration plant or a research station
6
LATVIAN DEMONSTRATION FARM Purpose: Trainee for new and “old” farmers in farming methods. Technicians and managers. A demo plant working as a site for farmers coming together Students. Practical tests. Trainee period Veterinary facilities. Wet lab. Fish disease diagnosis. Training in fish virology techniques Water treatment. Use of equipment as CO 2 stripper, aeration facilities for ponds Breeding Facilities for selected species Crayfish Start feeding, densities, fertilization, Keeping broodstock, growth tests Access to ponds
7
LATVIAN DEMONSTRATION PLANT Purpose : Environmental topics Running and demonstration of facilities for cleaning the farm outlet. Environmental control. Practices correct feeding. Feeding the fish only, not feeding the water. Environmental control. Taking care of threaten species or valuable stocks Freezing of sperm Keeping alive populations of threaten species Build up a GenBank In Norway: 33 threaten stocks of salmon in GenBanks

Latvian Demonstration farm One part of the station with broodstock and hatchery Income. Financing the management of a station -Start with buying selected broodstock -Build up a Latvian broodstock of trout -Build up a Latvian broodstock of crayfish -Strong veterinary control -Management like a quarantine station -Deliver eggs and fry from controlled populations = income to the station

Latvian Aquaculture Idea no.2 for the future Combination at one farm site with fish/crayfish farming and different activity offer to tourists and visitors But first some remarks, from one outsider, concerning the situation in Latvia to day and some modest hope for the future
12
Latvian Aquaculture Idea no.2 for the future Combination of different activity offers to visitors and tourists and combined with fish farming This has been practices in Latvia for a long time Enlargement and upgrading of this combination may be an proper income in the future. Meaning: expanding the number of activities to the whole family, not only the crazy male fishermen Offering a variation like a product of wilderness, beautiful countryside, blue lakes, added offer of various activities, a farm with different animals, for family members, combined with income from selling farmed fish. Next:Pictures showing examples

Duckweed
25
Duckweed ряска / ūdenslēcas Use of duckweed as fish feed is by far the most widespread application. Duckweed can be fed fresh to fish as the only feed, or in combination with other feed components to a polyculture of Chinese and Indian carp species
26
Duckweed Results indicate that duckweed meal can be produced for approximately 25 EUR per kilo in Norway - with only 5 months growth season. The production costs will presumably be less than 0,2 EUR per kilo in Southern Africa, if duckweed can be grown all year.
27
DUCKWEED It is actually the most efficient protein producer in the world with at least three times larger crop than soya, up to 45 % protein content An extensive FAO study from 1998 titled "DUCKWEED: A tiny aquatic plant with enormous potential for agriculture and environment" http://www.fao.org/ag/AGAinfo/resour ces/documents/DW/Dw2.htm
