2 doc.: IEEE 802.11-07/2456r0 Submission September 2007 Ganesh Venkatesan (Intel Corporation)Slide 2 Abstract This presentation defines the following in the context of VTS SG: Home Network Consumer Electronic device Home Environment

3 doc.: IEEE 802.11-07/2456r0 Submission Home Network Key Components –A Residential Gateway (CPE) –A set of devices that can directly connect to the residential gateway or through an intermediary External Connection – how the Residential Gateway is connected to the external network Internal Connection – how the devices within the home connect –to each other and –to the residential gateway Connectivity Options –Wired –Wireless –Hybrid September 2007 Ganesh Venkatesan (Intel Corporation)Slide 3

4 doc.: IEEE 802.11-07/2456r0 Submission Home Network Multiple simultaneous device-device connection may be active (direct, through an AP, or a hybrid connection) 802.1avb mechanisms maybe in play at the external network and need to be honored in the home network as well. In a hybrid home network, 802.1avb mechanisms operational in the wired part of the network must to appropriately propagated to the wireless part as well. 5 doc.: IEEE 802.11-07/2456r0 Submission Consumer Electronics Device Any device that is capable of: –Connecting to the home network –Sourcing or rendering data/voice/multimedia to/from the home network –Controlling how a source/renderer functions Examples September 2007 Ganesh Venkatesan (Intel Corporation)Slide 5 TVs, Displays, Speakers Personal players (music and/or video) DVRs PCs (Desktop/Laptop) DVD Players Gaming Consoles Remote controls, game controllers Remote Storage devices PDAs Telephones Video Cameras Still Cameras Radios Security System (cameras and/or sensors)

6 doc.: IEEE 802.11-07/2456r0 Submission Home Environment User expectations defined by wired experience –Very stringent constraints in some applications (HDTV, for instance) Dense –Contention for the limited number of available channel(s) –Overlapping BSS issues Extended –Range issues between source and destination –Attenuation due to multiple walls/floors Non 802.11 interference –Channel conditions change Unpredictable load conditions –Network loads change September 2007 Ganesh Venkatesan (Intel Corporation)Slide 6
