Welcome to SRFT! Produced by: Elizabeth Stone, Savana Shakir, Thomas Slater, Frances Ugwu

Introductions… We are the year 3 student reps from 2011 We hope to give you an insight of what it’s like to be a medical student at Salford Royal…….

The Course Structure…. What to expect when you first arrive The first 3 weeks How Year 3 is Structured The modules, Student Selected Component (SSC), Exams Finally a bit about SRFT and the District General Hospitals (DGH)

Introduction to year 3 First 3 weeks of year 3 → Introduction to Clinical Learning (ICL) During this time you will: Meet your new ‘Mummies and Daddies’. Meet the Dean and the Undergraduate Team. Have an introduction to SRFT Hospital. Have some basic skills sessions. Spend 1 week on your base ward.

Year 3 Split in to 2 modules NME – Nutrition, Metabolism and Excretion HLB – Heart, Lungs and Blood Each module last for 14 weeks and is split in to two 7 week blocks. During each 7 week block you will be attached to a firm with your PBL group. Half way through the year you will swap modules and change PBL groups

What is a firm? All this means is that your PBL group, of about 6-8 students, will be placed under a consultant who will organise your teaching. Each firm lasts for 7 weeks. You will have a firm ward where some bedside teaching will take place but you will also have seminars and lectures. Teaching may be carried out by the consultant or by other doctors on their team. You will also have: Time to spend on your base ward or firm ward Signs-ups Skills teaching from the skills tutors Community days at GP surgeries. Please look in your handouts for a ‘Week on a Firm’ to see what we experienced!

Base Wards As well as a firm ward you will also be allocated a base ward. Your base ward will become a ward where you can go to practice your skills, take histories from patients, practice examinations and generally get used to being part of the team on a hospital ward. This is something that was initiated for the first time last year and it can be a brilliant experience!

You will also have…. 2 SSCs → Each 4 weeks long 1 SSC after each module. These give you the chance to do something you’re interested in, practice your skills and learn some new ones!
