3. Diction Connotative Meaning  The phrase ‘in a kingdom by the sea’ is repeated throughout the poem.  The words ‘maiden’ is used instead of a ‘woman’ in the poem to represent Annabel Lee.

4. Grammar  past tense Example: first stanza, line1 (was) second stanza, line 3 (loved)  The writer wrote this poem after his wife who is Annabel Lee died of tuberculosis.
