2 Key Elements of a News Report 1.Headline Catches your attention Provides an overall summary of the story 2.Byline Writer’s name Writer’s speciality (e.g., home front, battlefront) 3.Place-Line Where the story begins 4.Lead Contains opening section Presents important information Provides answers to 5Ws (i.e., who, what, where, when, why) 5.Body Supplies details of the story Presents most important details first Consists of simple, true statements 6.Quotation Offers statements from witnesses or key players Adds accuracy Adds “at the scene” feeling

4 YOUR ASSIGNMENT: War News Create your own group of reporters (three members) to report on the war. Each reporter MUST write their own article. Your team’s complete project must cover the following areas:  ONE WWI battle story specific to the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF)  ONE Home Front issues (specific to Canada but not covered in third element such as the Conscription Crisis, Victory Bonds, Income Tax, purple gas and rationing, white flower campaign)  ONE story specific to a negative or discriminatory event in Canada OR ONE story specific to the Canadian government and their policies or actions Time Frame: Your article events must relate to WWI AND require some relationship to Canada’s identity. This will require communication within your group. You will be required to submit a progress report (point form) identifying the year and the events covered by each person in the group. Other Required Elements: (1) Title for newspaper (2) Bibliography/Reference list (3) Images and pictures with each article
