9/18/2015AVRSB4 Try It… Question before you read. Begin with the title. What do you wonder about? Gangs I wonder…if this will tell about life in a gang? I wonder … why people join gangs?

9/18/2015AVRSB5 Question during your reading. Are there words or ideas that you don’t understand? Are there things you wonder about?

9/18/2015AVRSB6 One Type of Question Literal (the answer is there in the text) Literal (the answer is there in the text) Gangs Being in a gang is part of my life. It’s not something I chose but something I was born into. My dad is in a gang and so are my uncles and brothers. Every time we loose someone close to us my mom cries. I’ve seen her cry so many times I’ve lost count. Me, I’m use to it. How did she become part of a gang? Oh, here it says she was born into it. Who else in her family is in a gang? Her father, uncles, and brothers.

9/18/2015AVRSB7 A 2nd Type of Question Inferential (using prior knowledge along with what is in the text to make sense of the text) Inferential (using prior knowledge along with what is in the text to make sense of the text) Gangs Being in a gang is part of my life. It’s not something I chose but something I was born into. My dad is in a gang and so are my uncles and brothers. Every time we lose someone close to us my mom cries. I’ve seen her cry so many times I’ve lost count. Me, I’m use to it. What does “lose someone” mean? I think they mean someone died.

9/18/2015AVRSB8 A 3rd Type of Question Critical (questions about decisions the author made about: style, content, point of view; questions about relevance and reliability of information) Critical (questions about decisions the author made about: style, content, point of view; questions about relevance and reliability of information) Gangs Being in a gang is part of my life. It’s not something I chose but something I was born into. My dad is in a gang and so are my uncles and brothers. Every time we lose someone close to us my mom cries. I’ve seen her cry so many times I’ve lost count. Me, I’m use to it. Why did the author decide to use the word “lose someone” rather than “someone dies” or “someone is murdered” ? Can a person ever really get use to death?

9/18/2015AVRSB9 Question after your reading. What questions linger? What was your opinion of the story or article? What big questions about life or society does this story or article raise? Are there questions you want to follow up on? Why do people stay in gangs? Gangs What is her role in the gang? Does she want to get out? I found this interesting to read but wonder “Is this situation realistic?” Are there gangs in Nova Scotia? How many people are in gangs?
