War Poetry Essay (Some information to help you with your writing.) A good website to use is the Online Writing Lab, http://owl.english.purdue.edu/. http://owl.english.purdue.edu/

Thesis Thesis = topic + opinion Your thesis should not be broad; it should be narrow and specific. The thesis should answer the reader’s question(s): “Why am I reading this paper? What am I reading in this paper?”

Organization You will need to make sure your paper flows well. ◦ I already laid out for you the basics of what you need to write about. ◦ You just need to decide where the paragraphs should go logically.

Quoting When you quote a single line of poetry, write it like any other short quotation. If the piece of poetry you are quoting crosses multiple lines of the poem itself, you may still type them in your text run together. ◦ Show the reader where the poem's line breaks fall by using slash marks. ◦ Ex: In his poem, "Mending Wall," Robert Frost writes: "Something there is that doesn't love a wall,/ that send the frozen-ground-swell under it."

Quoting If the quotation is three lines or longer, set it off in a block quotation. Quote the poem line by line as it appears on the original page. Do not use quotation marks, and indent one inch from the left margin. ◦ In his poem "Mending Wall," Robert Frost questions the building of barriers and walls: Before I built a wall I'd ask to know What I was walling in or walling out, And to whom I was like to give offense.

Lead-in Phrases Ineffective: ◦ Here's a quote which shows this: “ ◦ Paul tells Tjaden, “ It should be clear to the reader what the quotation means and why it's important (to the point you're trying to make in that paragraph).

Comma or Colon? A colon is used to introduce a quotation following a full sentence, as in the following example: ◦ Atticus uses the incident with Mrs. Dubose to teach Jem a lesson about courage: "Courage is when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what" (112). Use a comma if you don’t have a independent clause.

MLA Format Top left hand side of your first page should include: ◦ Your name ◦ Ms. Houselog ◦ Literature of War ◦ Due Date In the right hand side of the header for each page it should contain your last name and the page number.

Works Cited There should be a Works Cited page. It will include: ◦ Your poem ◦ The book you are comparing your poem to. Make sure to double check the citations if you are using any of the sources that create the citations for you. Your Works Cited page should be on a separate page.

Works Cited: Book Source Last Name, First Name. Title of Book. Place of Publication: Publisher, Year of Publication. You will need to cite whatever book you decide to compare your poem to.
