Capitalizing Sentences and Quotations Rule 1: Capitalize the pronoun I and the first word of a sentence. ▫Pets need love and attention. ▫Can you watch my dog while I am gone? Rule 2: Capitalize the first word of a sentence in parentheses that stands by itself. Don’t capitalize a sentence within parentheses that is contained within another sentence. ▫Games can be tools for learning about computers. (Many games require more computer knowledge than basic use requires.) ▫They were looking for software (they hoped to buy no more than two programs) that they could use for writing reports.

Capitalizing Sentences and Quotations Rule 3: Capitalize the first word of a complete sentence that follows a colon. Lowercase the first words of a sentence fragment that follows a colon. ▫The poet’s love letter was too well written: It intimidated the girl. ▫The poet’s love letter was passionate, heartwarming, and one thing more: intimidating.

Capitalizing Sentences and Quotations Rule 4: Capitalize the first word of a direct quotation that is a complete sentence. ▫My little brother asked, “Why can’t I go too? Unless it begins a sentence, don’t capitalize the first word of a direct quotation that cannot stand as a complete sentence. ▫Her boss described her as “energetic and intelligent.”

Capitalizing Sentences and Quotations Rule 5: Do NOT capitalize an indirect quotation. ▫My brother asked why he couldn’t go. An indirect quotation is often introduced with word that. ▫She said that she wanted to leave early. Rule 6: In a traditional poem, the first word of each line is capitalized. ▫Let us go then, you and I, When the evening is spread out against the sky Like a patient etherized upon a table;… -from “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” by T.S. Eliot

Exercise Write each incorrect sentence, correcting any errors in capitalization. If the sentence is correct, write C. 1.Is it true, as i’ve heard, that Everyone should drink at least eight glasses of water per day? 2.Jerry asked, “who wants to go to the mall?” 3.My kitten, whose name is dandelion, is growing just like a weed. 4.Even though i work out and lift weights, my mother still calls me “A delicate little thing.” 5.A writer from the local newspaper asked me, “What do you think about the principal of your new school?” 6.parting really can be, as Shakespeare put it, “Such sweet sorrow.”
