1
OBJECTIVE SWBAT: Identify cellular organelles and their purpose
2
HOW DOES A CELL DO ITS JOB? Cell Organelles
3
What jobs do cells do? Some examples: Making proteins, like keratin (hair follicles) Sending signals (nerve cells) Turning sunlight into glucose (leaf cells) Contracting for movement (muscle cells
4
Organelles Cooperate Organelles work together to allow the cell to accomplish its job.
5
CONTROL AND PROTEIN Nucleus, Ribosomes
6
The Nucleus The Control Center Located in the center of the cell Controls all functions of the cell, by controlling protein production
7
Ribosomes Ribosomes are the site of protein production. Located on the endoplasmic reticulum or floating freely in the cytoplasm
8
CELLULAR BOUNDARIES The Cell Membrane and Cell Wall
9
Cell Membrane Regulates what enters and leaves the cell.
10
Cell wall The cell wall provides support to plant cells and bacteria.
11
ASSEMBLY AND TRANSPORT OF PROTEINS Endoplasmic Reticulum, Golgi Apparatus
12
Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) A system of folded membranes that transport proteins within the cell
13
Golgi Apparatus G.A. marks proteins and exports them outside the cell in membrane bubbles called vesicles.
14
STORAGE AND RECYCLING Vacuoles, Lysosomes
15
Vacuoles Vacuoles are sacs that store water and other materials Vacuoles are in plant cells.
16
Lysosomes Membranous sac filled with enzymes (certain type of protein) that break down used organelles and large molecules Known as the recycling center.
17
Day Two: Cell Organelles
18
OBJECTIVE SWBAT: Identify cellular organelles and their purpose
19
ENERGY FOR THE CELL Chloroplasts and Mitochondria
20
Chloroplasts Capture the sun’s energy to make glucose (food) in plants and algae. Located in the cytoplasm and the the site of photosynthesis.
21
Brainstorm! Take two minutes to write down reasons you think plants have chloroplasts and animals do not.
22
Mitochondria “Power house” of the cell provides energy for cells. Cell that need more energy, have more mitochondria Both the ER and the mitochondria have folded membranes to increase the surface area where chemical reaction occur
23
Think About It! Take two minutes to think and write down whether you would expect muscle cells or fat cells to contain more mitochondria and why.
24
SUPPORT AND LOCOMOTION Cytoskeleton, Cytoplasm, Cillia and Flagella
25
Cytoplasm Jelly-like, clear fluid inside cell; holds organelles Fills all space besides organelles
26
Cytoskeleton Function: support structure of the cell. Located in the cytoplasm
27
Cilia and Flagella Movement of cell, made of microtubules.
28
Plants vs. Animals Take two minutes and think of three organelles that plants have, and animals do not.
29
Plants vs. Animals Brainstorm for two minutes and discuss with a shoulder partner, why plants need these organelles and animals do not.
