Required Hardware & Software “Standard” Windows PC with CD, SoundCard, Color Monitor (other versions for Apple Mac; some good for both operating systems) Speakers and/or Headphones (both is best) PC Microphone (best to use “headset”) 17” or Larger PC Monitor IF multiple students to be collaborating PC Printer (color a nice option but not as “required” as many people believe) Note: Even an older PC should work just fine!

PixWriter A “talking picture and word processor” Specifically designed for beginning and struggling readers and writers. Combines print, pictures, and speech allowing writers to compose even if they lack knowledge of sound-symbol relationships, spelling and alphabet skills. Text can be copied from another program

Write: Outloud Talking Word Processor for Menus and auditory feedback of writing Designed specifically for students who struggle with writing Encourages writing by “sounding out” words for daily journals, etc. Sold as Windows and Mac together

Storybook Weaver Low priced oldie but goodie! ($12 each) Will work just fine on a 10 year old PC –May even need to change your PC video settings to 256 colors and VGA mode) Includes “Text To Speech” conversion so writer can HEAR what they wrote much like others do. Templates and “story starters” get student off to a quick start.

Writing Blaster CD required for using program (the only one requiring the CD in our little review group). Targeted to Ages 6-9 / Grades 1-2-3) Very low price (about $12. per unit) Multimedia design of stories, cards, letters, reports, poetry, and more
