Where Complex Challenges Meet Smart Solutions Technical Services Packaging Transload Transportation Disposition Rail Transportation of Radioactive, Hazardous and Non-RCRA Sediments PIANC 2012 Dredging San Diego, CA Oct 24, 2012
2
MHF Services Overview Asset-based, integrated logistics company formed in 1994 Became a portfolio company of Relativity Capital, L.P., a private equity firm in June 2009 ~$55M in private railcars and intermodal container equipment 20 million tons of environmentally sensitive materials moved to date Service generators and shippers of radioactive, industrial, hazardous, and non-hazardous waste, materials, and by- products 2
3
MHF Services Overview Handle container and bulk material transfers at permanent and temporary transload facilities Packaging division designs and manufactures durable and flexible packaging systems for all types of materials Integrated approach offers improved project safety, efficiency, and lower overall costs Provide technical services, packaging, transload, transportation, and disposition 3
4
Transportation Services Seamless transportation services via direct rail or intermodal rail, truck, and marine Long-standing relationships with Class I, Class II and short- line Railroads ~$55M in private railcars and intermodal container equipment 855 private high-capacity railcars, plus more than 780 standard and specialty intermodal shipping containers 4
5
Packaging Packaging tailored to specific project needs or manufacturing processes Custom packaging to meet unique needs Stringent Quality Assurance Durable packaging including custom and standard intermodal shipping containers, metal containers, drums, boxes, and any package required for shipping Flexible packaging: Lift Liners™ up to 12 ton capacity Rail Car Liners Container Liners Rail Car and Truck Tarps, Large Component Protective Covers Custom-Sewn Containment Systems 5
6
Transloading Combines efficiencies of various modes of transportation Five permanent facilities nationwide Temporary facilities on- site or at rail junction Portable ramp Innovative intermodal applications 6
7
Technical Services Specialize in management of environmentally sensitive materials Full project support from waste characterization to off-site shipment Full project management, field personnel and brokerage services Recommendations for most cost-effective disposition approach 7
8
Dredging Sediments Removed sediments are typically impacted with the highest contaminant load, requiring treatment or off-site disposal Transport of removed sediment is a critical project component Most sediment is shipped and disposed of as a hazardous waste; transporters must have permits 8
9
Mode of Transportation Truck is the most common and usually the basis for project estimates and bid specs Rail transportation is often overlooked The generator’s site does not need to be directly served by rail 9
10
Rail Advantages High capacity railcars enable removal of a greater volume of material, while reducing excavation time, public scrutiny, traffic congestion, highway infrastructure damage, and carbon emissions Rail is 2-4 times more fuel efficient and 3 times cleaner than trucks Typical railcar can carry more than 100 net tons of sediment, or greater than 4 truckloads 10
11
Equipment Experts identify proper rail car conveyance methodologies such as low and high side gondolas or container flatcars and supply packaging to meet transit regulations Different packaging and car combinations accommodate the operational considerations, disposal facility constraints and/or regulatory requirements 11
12
Operational Considerations Is your facility rail served? Does the waste require packaging? What are the loading capabilities at project site? What are the receiving facility capabilities? 12

13 Case Studies Upper Hudson River Sediment Remediation TVA Dredging and Fly Ash Removal New Bedford Harbor Superfund Site
14
14 Upper Hudson River Sediment Remediation ~ 283,000 cubic yards of PCB- contaminated sediment was removed from a six-mile stretch of the Upper Hudson River during Phase I MHF provided the following services: Fleet of 450 railcars to support the project Inspecting and switching of loaded and empty railcars Testing and inspection of unit trains prior to departure from the short-line railroad Inspection, maintenance and repair of the rail yard and rail yard loading area Repairs on railcars Inspection and maintenance of a weigh-in-motion scale Loading and lining gondola railcars Managing the off-site round-trip logistics of unit trains between the site and the waste disposal facility
15
15 TVA Dredging and Fly Ash Removal MHF supported the TVA’s prime contractor responsible for dredging and removal of a massive fly ash release Phase I of the Project involved: Dredging to remove ash from the Emory and Clinch Rivers Lining and loading railcars Shipping the ash to an off-site disposal facility A total of 414 unit trains of ash were shipped MHF manufactured 40,000 custom railcar liners to supply loading and shipping operations averaging over 100 railcars per day on a seven day per week basis MHF provided on-site personnel to train prime contractor in package installation and closing, developed modified designs based on changing waste conditions and load out- processes, and assisted in identifying load- out problems to improve efficiencies Liners were designed and manufactured in Sweetwater, TN to meet TVA requirements and DOT regulations for the fly ash material Fly ash at the TVA Kingston site in East Tennessee being loaded into railcars outfitted with MHF custom liners.
16
16 New Bedford Harbor Superfund Site MHF provides transloading via our Worcester Facility, packaging, and rail transportation of PCB-contaminated and non-hazardous waste from the New Bedford Harbor Superfund Site. MHF transloads 200 to 300 tons per day during the shipping season with an estimated project life of 11 years and a volume of 450,000 tons.
