CORRECT: On Johnny’s first night away from his home, he realizes “to survive [he] had to be hard, had to watch, had to plot and plan, had to study each person he met”(Meyers 57).

4 Do not announce  This proves the thesis…  This quotes says….

5 Please capitalize your words  Capitalize the first words of sentences and lines of traditional poetry.  Capitalize the first word of a direct quotation, if it is a complete sentence. Do not capitalize a direct quotation if it is a sentence fragment.  Capitalize the pronoun I.  Capitalize the first, last and all other important words in titles, including verbs; but not conjunctions, articles, or prepositions with fewer than five letters.  Capitalize North, South, East, and West when used as sections of the country, but not as compass directions.  Do not capitalize names of seasons.

11 Have a Works Cited page -This should be the last page of your essay, on it’s own page. -You should have 4 sources listed on this in alphabetical order. -This should be Times New Roman 12, double-spaced.

15 Spell my name correctly  It’s on your schedule….and on turnitin.com where you are turning it in.  Wyllie (not Whylie, Willie, Wylie, Wiley, etc)

16 Do not start sentences like this:  And  Because  But

17 Do not summarize the plot  You need to write your essay under the assumption that the reader (me) has read your novel. Do not regurgitate what happens in the novel, analyze why it happens and how it depicts the theme you are discussing.

18 Titles of books should be italicized, articles should be in quotations  “Analysis of The Scarlet Letter”  The Scarlet Letter  Be sure to reference texts appropriately, i.e. do not call Hamlet a novel. Literary criticism articles are articles, not novels.
