3 Recovery and Wellness

4 Recovery  There are many pathways to recovery.  Recovery is self-directed and empowering.  Recovery involves a personal recognition of the need for change and transformation.  Recovery is holistic.  Recovery has cultural dimensions.  Recovery exists on a continuum of improved health and wellness.  Recovery is supported by peers and allies.  Recovery emerges from hope and gratitude.  Recovery involves a process of healing and self- redefinition.  Recovery involves addressing discrimination and transcending shame and stigma.  Recovery involves (re)joining and (re)building a life in the community.  Recovery is a reality. 9 Environmental Questions to Ask  What is important for you to have in your home?  Where do you want to live?  What do you need to be close to? Supports  Assist with housing applications  Promote organization at home  Take a class on renter’s rights and responsibilities/Share information

10 Intellectual Questions to Ask  What do you like to do to keep your mind active?  How are you creative?  What would you like to learn? Supports  Facilitate a book/reading group or crafting group  Locate existing community groups  Attend a local group with someone the first few times

11 Physical Questions to Ask  What do you do to keep your body active?  What activities do you enjoy?  What makes doing exercise hard? Supports  Facilitate a walking club  Find activity groups in the community  Ask about progress towards fitness related goals

12 Occupational Questions to Ask  What jobs have you considered applying for?  What would you like to do?  What type of workweek do you envision working? Supports  Connect with employment specialist  Encourage progress towards goals to go to work – or change work situation

13 Spiritual Questions to Ask  What spiritual beliefs do you have?  What do you like about when you practice your faith with others?  Alone? Supports  Connect with faith group in area  Assist in creating space for practice  Be interested in explorations of faith

14 Social Questions to Ask  What things do you like to do? Can you do it with people?  What would you like to try? Learn?  Who do you spend time with? Supports  Locate similar interest groups  Go with people to early outings with potential social groups  Practice starting conversations

15 Financial Questions to Ask  How do you track your finances?  What do you imagine a life without SSDI to look like? Supports  Present as support for financial meetings (ex. SSI, WIN)  Practice balancing checkbook/budget  Brainstorm bill pay reminder strategies

16 Sexual Questions to Ask  What are you looking for in a relationship?  What type of birth control are you using? Supports  Listen without judgment  Accompany to a doctor, if necessary Admit your discomfort: Can we think of other people you can talk to on this subject?
