A solid foundation MAKING A GOOD STORY

Recipe for a Good Story 1.Start with a character or two who want something 2.Add one or more obstacles, which create conflict 3.Mix together until the predicament is resolved (4-6 minutes) 4.Sit back and enjoy! *Note: this dish will tastee best if the main characters have changed or learned something about themselves.

A Short Film in 3 Acts I: Setup –Who is the film about? –Where is it? –What is going to happen? II: Confrontation –What is the conflict? What does the character have to overcome? III: Resolution –Tie up loose ends; resolve the conflict; solve the mystery; complete the story

From Idea to Story Where will you begin? Use a starting point that captures your imagination or unlocks a powerful reaction. For instance: –A situation/event that made you laugh. –A strange dream. –An outlandish article from the paper. –A piece of dialogue between two strangers. –A chapter of interesting family lore passed down over generations. –An abstract concept (intolerance, loneliness, poverty)

The Challenge Collaborate with classmates to develop a creative, original story that your class will develop into an three to five minute movie, with a soundtrack.

5 TIPS TO REMEMBER 1.THE BEST IDEAS are simple. Focus on one main conflict, then develop and explore it in unusual ways. 2.Establish your conflict has soon as possible. 3.Create believable characters - main character(s) and antagonist(s). 4.Make sure your conflict escalates. Know what your characters’ goals are and what the obstacle is. 5.Make sure your ending is the best thing about your film!
