(1955-1968) Arguably, since the 1860’s (*or earlier) Timeline of African-American Civil Rights Movement Where was it? (USA, mainly in the Southern states)

3 Why did it happen? Slavery ended officially in 1865, but racism/discrimination did not end there. Resistance to 13 th 14 th & 15 th amendments 13 th – ended slavery 14 th – granted citizenship 15 th – right to vote i.e. Jim Crow laws (racial segregation) Treated as second-class citizens

7 What did they get? (1964) Civil Rights Act Signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson Forbade discrimination based on a person's race, color, national origin, religious beliefs, or sex. It protected every citizen's right to use public facilities, to get employment, and to vote
