6 INKOMATI CATCHMENT MANAGEMENT AGENCY 6 Komati and Sabie/Sand catchments water security currently acceptable Crocodile under water stress (shortages of 160 million m 3 per year) due to: –Available water already allocated according to previous Water Act –Growth in Municipal water use Major growth in industrial and housing projects Inefficiency of water use within municipalities –Higher demands from Mozambique regarding minimum flows at border Water stress – huge risk for agriculture & other sectors

15 INKOMATI CATCHMENT MANAGEMENT AGENCY 15 Rhodes University Development of Water Quality Management Framework Developed a stakeholder platform for sharing interests on a common pool and planning together to achieve common interest. Developed a model to determine the waste load against interim water quality objectives and currently in the testing phase. The model will assist transparent and collective decision making as stakeholders for stakeholder’s collective benefit. It has brought diverse stakeholders together to manage water quality.

16 INKOMATI CATCHMENT MANAGEMENT AGENCY 16 Wits University Developed a stakeholder centred public participation process based on strategic adaptive management. This platform encourages buy-in and consensus by stakeholders on matters relating to the protection of water resources as a common pool resource. UKZN –RISKOMAN: Operational Governance Dashboard, Adaptive Operational River Management Framework. PSP - Development and implementation of pro-active acid mine drainage strategy. Pro-active AMD task team has been established with buy in from stakeholders (mining houses, authorities and NGOs). Sharing of information from various mining houses - prevention of mining related pollution, and plans to address decants.
