The Road to Achieving AASHTO’s Safety Goal Historic Drop in Fatalities in 2008 A portion of the 9 % drop can be attributed to drop in VMT and economy. DOT’s have made safety a priority and implementing aggressive safety programs. State Highway Agencies Are Working More Closely with Safety Partners Reauthorization CEO Checklists Penn DOT implemented rumble strips out of the checklist process.

The Vehicle Industry – Partner to the AASHTO Safety Goal Challenges Higher energy costs are causing consumers to buy smaller vehicles. The physics of the crash mean that a smaller vehicle are at a disadvantage. Future success of crash avoidance technologies depend upon applicability, intuitiveness, acceptability and adaptation rate.
