Sydney Region Post Installation ICP Online Survey Findings In order to understand the issues that schools have faced in the first round of installations, principals in the “first 200” were asked to complete an online survey. 138 responses were received from principals in 10 days. 92% of principals indicated that the installation met their expectations. Positive comments suggested that “the equipment is excellent and in good working order” of the few negative comments principals said: “there were a few technical glitches”. 69% of principals indicated that they were satisfied with the amount of information they had received. Principals commented that the “information process worked well and the support from their local IT person was excellent”. Negative comments included that “the installation date had changed a couple of times” and “when they arrived the room was unsuitable”. 9. Sydney Region More than 75% of principals were satisfied with the work of the installation team. Positive comments centred on the “professional and efficient behaviour of the installers” who “changed the board position to meet the school’s requirements”. Negative comments focussed on the installation particularly the height of the interactive whiteboard, one principal whose comments were typical said: “Our board was set up too low on the wall”. Subsequent installations to schools will be greatly improved because of the strong commitment to collaboration in working through all of the issues identified in the experience of the “first 200” and in the lessons learned from the initial installation activity. 10. Sydney Region 2. Network Bandwidth Project (NGEN) NGEN completed the installations for the first 201 locations by 30 June. It is now working on the next set of installations. The Connected Classrooms Program has identified the top 400 locations (40 per region). The Department has also negotiated a new contract for 1,641 locations. Some of these locations already have 10Mbps connections or were completed during the upgrade to the “first 200” locations. Either way, this new contract has improved bandwidth costs for the Department. The scope of NGEN is to deliver a minimum of 10Mbps to each location over the next 24-30 months; however sites that have currently more than 10Mbps will maintain the current service they have today. Sydney Region Side by Side, July 2008 Email gets Googled The education department will become one of the world’s largest clients of Google following the selection of a new email provider for NSW students. Former Acting education minister John Hatzistergos announced SMS Management & Technology had been chosen to provide a customised email system for NSW public school and TAFE students, using Google’s Gmail service. “Students will have greatly expanded mailbox storage capacity, improved user features and state-of-the-art filtering and security,” Mr Hatzistergos said. “The new email system will cater for 1.3 million users and be in place by the end of the year.” The new system will offer at least six gigabytes email storage per mailbox and be similar to standard Gmail to use. The three-year contract is worth about $9.5 million with a two-year extension option. The department’s chief information officer Stephen Wilson told the recent interactive classrooms conference in Sydney the decision made the department one of “Google’s largest [customers] in the world”.

The email upgrade coincides with the rollout of the State Government’s $158 million Connected Classrooms program. Mr Wilson said the program was ahead of schedule with 202 schools receiving their equipment by the end of June. Another 400 schools would receive equipment by the end of December. The bandwidth upgrade in schools was on schedule with the majority expected to have 10 megabits per second by the end of 2009. “We will be, far and away, ahead of all other states and territories in Australia,” he said.
