3
Elements of Art #1: Composition How a piece of art is arranged. Composition can create hierarchy, which highlights the most important elements and forces less important elements to recede. Compositions can be Symmetrical or Asymmetrical
4
Elements of Art #2: Line Line is an essential part of any work of art, and aids the viewer’s eye in moving up, down, across, and through the composition. Different kinds of line create different sensations and feelings. Line may be Straight or curved Thick or thin Diagonal, horizontal, or vertical Or any combination of these!
5
Shape and form differ from each other in that shape is two-dimensional and form is three-dimensional. Each may or may not be defined by line, and create the basis of a composition. Shape and form may be: Organic or Geometric and May be repeated to create a pattern Elements of Art #3: Shape and Form
6
Many types of art depict three- dimensional objects or scenes on a two-dimensional plane. The successful illusion of space is essential to many important works of art. Feelings of space can be achieved by perspective, or by shading and highlighting. Space in an artwork can be divided into Positive space: the subject itself Negative space: the space around the subject Elements of Art #4: Space
7
Color is light reflected off of objects, and has three main characteristics: Hue: the actual color itself. Red, yellow, blue, etc. Value: how light or dark a colour is. Tints are colours + white Shades are colours + black Intensity: how bright or dull a colour is. Various colors, hues, values, and intensities can create different feelings and meanings in a work of art, and also are used as a device to move the viewer’s eye through a composition. Elements of Art #5: Color
8
Elements of Art #6: Texture Texture, like space, is often associated with three- dimensional objects. In art, texture can be: “Created” in a two-dimensional work by careful use of color, line, and shading Actual physical texture Surface texture: the texture of a three-dimensional object The texture of what is generally a two-dimensional work, such as a painting, when unconventional materials are used.
