3 Cytoskeleton The cytoskeleton helps the cell with shape, support, and movement. It often looks like lines or fibers running throughout the inside of the cell.

4 Shape For cells without cell walls, the cytoskeleton determines the shape of the cell. Still exists in cells WITH cell walls though, it just doesn’t end up determining the shape so much.

5 Support Cytoskeleton can connect to places outside the cell, supporting the cell in its place within a body. It also helps hold organelles in position within the cell, supporting them within the cell.

6 Movement INSIDE the cell Cytoskeleton helps things move around the inside of the cell, like the tracks that packages move on. http://youtu.be/7sRZy9PgPvg

7 Movement OUTSIDE the cell Cytoskeleton can cause a cell to move. For example, white blood cells that help protect your body from diseases and viruses “crawl” around your body by making the cytoskeleton move. Cancer cells can move around the body by the actions of the cytoskeleton. Researchers work on developing drugs that fight cancer by stopping the cytoskeleton from working. http://youtu.be/PwqY99gNipE

8 Cytoskeleton Analogy The human skeleton is a possible analogy for some ways the cytoskeleton works if the cell were a human body: Provides support to our body Allows for movement Tent poles is another good analogy for some ways it works if the cell were a tent: Provides support for tent fabric Secures the tent in place by staking it down or tying it to a tree. A railroad track is another good analogy if the cell was a country: Pre-set lines that goods move along going from one place to another.
