Alkenes and Ethanol

 Recap from last lesson- To evaluate 2 ways in which ethanol fuel is made  To extract oil from a fruit like avocados  To describe these fats  SATURATED FAT UNSATURATED FAT HYDROGENATED FAT  State how they effect health

 To make a slimy polymer and investigate how it can be made to have different properties

 To be able to  Describe an alkene and explain how they are made.  Draw a diagram of ethene  State what is meant by an unsaturated molecule and the test for unsaturated molecules  Explain how polymers are made from alkenes  Describe how polymers with different physical properties are made and uses of plastics

 Have a double bond between the carbon atoms  They are made from cracking long chain hydrocarbons eg Kerosene  Are very useful to make lots of other things

 Unsaturated means they can make more bonds by opening up a double bond  Their general formula is C n H 2n  Make 2 ethene molecules. These small molecules are called monomers

 Break the bonds between the 2 ethene molecules and join the carbon atoms into a chain. You now have a POLYMER  Long chains of ethene molecules make POLYETHENE

 Styrene forms polystyrene

 Their physical properties are different because:  1. They are made from different monomers 2. The monomers can be polymerised at different temperatures and pressures.

 If this is polymerised at high temperatures and pressures it is flexible and has low density- plastic bags can be made  If it is polymerised at low temperatures with a catalyst it is rigid and dense plastic cups can be made  This means it can be used for different things

 Tooth filings

New plasters- the top comes off and when light gets to the layer below the sticky property disappears

 What is a monomer?  What is a polymer?  How are polymers formed?  Name some polymers and their uses.  Why can they have different properties?

 Ehanol is cheap to make from oil but why is this not a brilliant idea?

 Why is this a better way to make ethanol?  What are the problems of making ethanol like this?

 List the advantages and disadvantages of making ethanol from oil or from sugar and yeast
