Screening for abdominal aortic aneurysm Sgrinio am ymlediadau aortig abdomenol Training of Screening Staff 23 rd April 2013 Author: Dr Gareth Davies, Ms Jo Jones
2
Training of Screening Staff For Regional coordinators and the screeners to fulfil their role Develop a process of education and training AAA Screening will performed the to the highest standard In accordance with WAAASP agreed operational procedure Screening for abdominal aortic aneurysm Sgrinio am ymlediadau aortig abdomenol
3
Training of Screening Staff The role of the screening staff will include –recording accurately the sonographic measurements of the aortic diameter –collecting other patient information –reporting scan results –communicating to men verbally Screening for abdominal aortic aneurysm Sgrinio am ymlediadau aortig abdomenol
4
Training of Screening Staff Identify an appropriate university education and training provider for WAAASP This was undertaken by a procurement process –Public Health Wales –Velindre NHS Wales. Screening for abdominal aortic aneurysm Sgrinio am ymlediadau aortig abdomenol
5
Training of Screening Staff AAA screening project evaluation team A workforce education tender specification document was developed quality / price scoring matrix document Screening for abdominal aortic aneurysm Sgrinio am ymlediadau aortig abdomenol
6
Training of Screening Staff Education tender specification document was developed –Sustainability –Compliance with specification –Quality Assurance of course Screening for abdominal aortic aneurysm Sgrinio am ymlediadau aortig abdomenol
7
Training of Screening Staff Three universities submitted their tendering documents The AAA screening project evaluation scored all submitted tenders The decision to award the training contract to University of Glamorgan was based best evaluated score Screening for abdominal aortic aneurysm Sgrinio am ymlediadau aortig abdomenol
8
Training of Screening Staff Since awarding the contract to the University of Glamorgan Regular meetings between the AAA project team and the University –course contents –time tables –development of the education training programme programme document and the participant’s handbook Screening for abdominal aortic aneurysm Sgrinio am ymlediadau aortig abdomenol
9
Training of Screening Staff Screening for abdominal aortic aneurysm Sgrinio am ymlediadau aortig abdomenol Training was led by Annemarie Bevan, Senior Lecturer, University of Glamorgan and supported by visiting lecturers and sonographers. Two broad learning outcomes; clinical and theoretical started in January. Delivered as three days theoretical learning Followed by two days clinical / “hands on” training in University’s state of the art simulation suite.
10
Training Following these initial five days, screeners began clinical placement Four weeks after initial training a “consolidation day” was held where screeners were observed performing an Ultrasound scan, QA of images was performed and screeners had opportunity for reflection on placement.
11
Course content WAAASP policies and procedures Anatomy and physiology of normal and abnormal aorta Physics of ultrasound Communication Image artefacts, bio effects, ergonomics and health and safety Healthcare ethics, Measuring an abdominal aorta Image optimisation, storage and review
12
Clinical placement All screeners have to undertake a minimum of 120 hours in clinical placement and perform a minimum of 100 scans (75 normal aortas, 25 AAA) Using the GE logic ultrasound machines. Complete a total of 37 competencies during the clinical placement.
13
Clinical placements Clinical mentors were identified and trained in each placement area. Placements were a mix of vascular laboratories and ultrasound departments in local hospitals
14
Assessment Two key methods of assessment : Two written case studies (1000 words) of a normal and an abnormal aorta Submitted five weeks after initial training All screeners have passed this element.
15
Assessment Clinical assessment – screeners are assessed by two clinical supervisors in University of Glamorgan performing two abdominal aorta scans in a real clinic situation. Real patients have volunteered for AAA scans Screeners will be expected to scan men and give results as if they were running a WAAASP clinic.
16
Assessment All ultrasound images taken on placement were saved a selection of which will be reviewed at the final assessment. Screeners will also be assessed orally before and after the scan. If pass, receive a Certificate of Competence. Awaiting CASE Accreditation
