TECHNOLOGY USED IN EXPLORING THE REGIONS

TECHNOLOGY USED IN EXPLORING THE POLAR REGIONS Ways of polar living and transportation have changed over the years. Instead of husky teams, explorers now use over- snow vehicles such as the Two-man skidoo where a team is tied together for a safe field travel. http://www.antarctica.ac.uk/images/in_pictures/vehicles.php The Sno-Cat at speed! Information for whole presentation provided by http://www.antarctica.ac.uk/living_and_working/daily_life/index.php

TECHNOLOGY USED IN EXPLORING THE POLAR REGIONS Air crafts are also a way of transportation especially used for traveling in extreme Antarctic climate. This picture below is of Dash-7 and Twin Otter flying together. (both Canadian aircrafts) Ice strengthened ships are one way to transport cargo and science equipment http://www.antarctica.ac.uk/images/in_pictures/james_clark_ross.php httphttp://www.antarctica.ac.uk/images/in_pictures/twin_otter.php

TECHNOLOGY USED IN EXPLORING THE POLAR REGIONS Anybody who wants to survive in the polar regions for at least 100 days will need the following things: *SHELTER* Specially designed pyramid tent made to last through high winds, butyl ground sheet, airbed and a sheepskin. http://www.antarctica.ac.uk/living_and_working/camping/index.php

TECHNOLOGY USED IN EXPLORING THE POLAR REGIONS Anybody who wants to survive in the polar regions for at least 100 days will need the following things: For polar clothing to work it must keep the body warm, especially the toes and fingers, allow free movement, be comfortable. The best choice in fabric would probably be natural fabric from animal skins. The footwear depend on the activities and conditions, for e.g. Mountain boots are used for skiing and rock work and steel-toed boots are used where snow is melting. http://www.antarctica.ac.uk/living_and_working/daily_life/clothing.php Pictures provided by Microsoft Power Point clip art.

TECHNOLOGY USED IN EXPLORING THE POLAR REGIONS Since explorers are constantly travelling by sleds and aircrafts they need to be light and fit. Their food and meals need to be quickly and easily prepared in order to save fuel. The supplies consists freeze dried or dried main meals, different types of dried soups, dried vegetables, rice, tea, coffee, hot chocolate, orange juice, biscuits, chocolate, butter sugar porridge and dried milk. At parties they have a “goodies box” Which may contain herbs, spices and even Ketchup! Snow is melted to make water. The water is very clean. Cooking is done on paraffin fired primus stoves. http://www.antarctica.ac.uk/living_and_working/daily_life/food.php Pictures provided by Microsoft Power Point clip art.

TECHNOLOGY USED IN EXPLORING THE POLAR REGIONS Communication is very important especially when it comes to exploring extreme environments like the polar regions. Communication can be the difference between life and death. All stations have permanent satellite links to the outside world using broadband internet and a very high- tech telephone network. Portable gadgets such as radios, cell phones and walkie- talkies provide easy communication with field parties, ships, and aircrafts. The only bad thing is that all these systems can be disrupted by bad weather. http://www.antarctica.ac.uk/living_and_working/daily_life/communi cations.phphttp://www.antarctica.ac.uk/living_and_working/daily_life/communi cations.php Pictures provided by Microsoft Power Point clip art.
